After being forced to break up with her in 1958, Russ Williams hopes to find his ex-girlfriend Gloria to explain his reasons after 55 years.

A CARDIFF man is making an appeal to find his long-lost girlfriend who he was forced to break up with more than 50 years ago.

Russ Williams, 78, of Gabalfa Avenue, Gabalfa, last saw Gloria Parley in 1958 when he was forced to break off their two-year relationship due to work commitments.

Russ first met Gloria in 1956 while he was travelling from Brighton to Cardiff on a train, after visiting relatives. The couple got chatting during the journey which sparked a two-year relationship.

Cardiff council have committed to closing the pay gap between men and women by April

CARDIFF Council pledged to close the pay gap between its male and female employees, although some argue not enough has been done.

Council statistics, revealed in a report put to cabinet last night, show female employees of Cardiff Council earned on average £1.05 less than men in 2011/2012. On a 35-hour week, this is a difference of £36.75, which is almost £2,000 per year.

HOMEOWNERS and traders on a busy Cardiff street want a saturation zone restriction on licensed premises due to fears of being overrun with late-night takeaways.

Residents fear Whitchurch Road will “become a kebab street like City Road” as takeaway businesses shut out by the area’s saturation zone spread north. Concerns have heightened due to a new late-night takeaway, ROJ BBQ Restaurant, opening soon.

Hundreds of people are expected to protest against the controversial welfare reform outside Cardiff City Hall this Saturday

CARDIFF is preparing itself for the biggest outcry yet against the “Bedroom Tax” which is due to come into force in April.

A protest, organised by lobbyist group Labour Left, will be held outside City Hall in the civic centre this Saturday from 1pm, with hundreds of people expected to take part to voice their opposition to the Westminster Government policy. More than fifty other protests are to be held simultaneously in cities across the UK in what could be the largest opposition movement to the austerity measures yet.

Employees get pay rise despite shop closures across Cardiff

EMPLOYEES from John Lewis and Waitrose in Cardiff have reason to celebrate after being awarded a bonus equivalent to almost nine weeks pay.
From 2012 until now, Cardiff has seen the closure of Peacocks and BHS, Thomas Cook and Barratts going into administration and hundreds of job losses. But the John Lewis Partnership has appeared to ignore the struggles of the high street and gathered profit increases across all outlets. As a result of this fourth consecutive gain, 84,700 partners will receive a bonus of 17 per cent.

The recent announcement of Cardiff as a host port for the world’s premier round-the-world sailing race in 2017/18 has sparked a row between two Cardiff councillors.
The row began on Twitter on Wednesday evening as Plaid Cymru councillor Neil McEvoy tweeted his anger at the announcement saying “£1.5 million for a boat race. No money for vital services. Labour Cardiff Council. #redtories.” This comment sparked a heated debate between himself and Labour councillor Huw Thomas on the social networking site.

Welsh Cavalry moving to Norfolk due to defence cuts


The Welsh cavalry will be moving to Norfolk after spending the last six years stationed abroad, following today’s announcement of the withdrawal of British troops from Germany.
Defence Secretary Philip Hammond announced cuts of 400 Army personnel from Wales as well as the withdrawal of the British Army from Germany by 2019.

Volunteers can exchange credits for days out 

 

THE UK might have lost its AAA credit rating last week, but a different type of moneyless economy is growing in one of Cardiff’s worst-hit communities.

TimeplACE is an organisation which provides a currency to the community, based on a system where volunteers can buy experiences with rewarded credit. The organisation works with more than 35 voluntary and community organisations in Ely and Caerau, and sees in excess of 200 participants on a regular basis.

Cardiff has six Community councils including Old St Mellons and Radyr

LLANDAFF residents may put in a bid for their village to have its own community council, so they can have more control over services in their area.

If successful, residents would have the power to raise money locally to spend on facilities such as bus shelters, allotments, street lighting, war memorials and public toilets.

A community council is equivalent to a parish council. It can levy a charge on each household in the area through the main billing authority (Cardiff Council).

Since Tom's death last year, The Tom Maynard Trust has proved a great success and a host of sponsored events are planned for 2013. 

ON TUESDAY, an inquest into the death of Cardiff cricketer Tom Maynard will be held at Westminster Coroner’s Court.

The former Glamorgan batsman was hit by a London Underground train in Wimbledon last Summer following a T20 game for Surrey against Kent.

Since his death, the Tom Maynard Trust was established to help the development of aspiring disadvantaged cricketers and the support of other sportspeople. The Trust provides bursaries, help with training and education, assistance with kit and equipment and financial support for overseas placements.

Despite cut-backs and closures of sporting facilities, Cardiff is making its case to a host the third-largest sporting event in the world.

IT IS 55 years since the world watched athletes march onto the field at Cardiff Arms Park for the opening ceremony of an event which Cardiff Council is hoping to recreate.

The sixth Empire Games, now the Commonwealth Games, were hosted in Cardiff in 1958. Over 1,000 athletes competed from 35 nations, in 94 events. Today, more than 5,000 competitors take part from 72 different countries and Cardiff Council is planning a bid for the 2026 Games.

The bid has raised questions over the potentially damaging costs of holding the world's third largest sporting event.

The row over the development of a building on Llandaff Fields has intensified after documents revealed Cardiff council have expressed an interest in planning proposals.

Nerys Lloyd-Pierce, Chair of Cardiff Civic Society put in an Freedom of Information (FOI) request to receive all correspondence between Cardiff council, Clwb Rygbi and all key stakeholders relating to the proposed sports development.

The FOI revealed 246 pages of correspondence, most of which were emails sent between 2011 and 2012.

Police in Cardiff continue their search for Ben Thompson, rugby fan from Haverfordwest

Police in Cardiff are continuing their search for missing man Ben Thompson.

            Volunteer search teams, made up of friends and family of the rugby fan from Haverfordwest, gathered at the Sand Martin pub on Leckwith Road in Canton this morning to launch what could be the last desperate search. Mr Thompson disappeared in Cardiff after attending the Wales v Ireland Six Nations match on Saturday.
