Sam Warburton has been ruled out of Wales’s penultimate match in the Six Nations against Italy with a knee problem.

The Cardiff Blues openside was expected to start against the Azzurri and was set to face a back row showdown with Sergio Parisse but it is believed Gatland wants his captain fit for Wales’s final game against France in Cardiff.

Osian Roberts, who was part of Speed’s coaching staff, will take charge of the match with new manager Chris Coleman helping out on the sidelines.

Cardiff defender Anthony has said it is a "dream" to be able to face midfielder Steven for the first time and to see the 89-capped England star lead his Liverpool team out at Wembley, the club they both supported as boys.

Cardiff City defender Anthony Gerrard has described his cousin and Liverpool captain Steven as, “one of the best footballers of his generation” as he prepares to face his boyhood club Liverpool in the Carling Cup final.

The Bluebirds go into Sunday’s clash with the Reds as big underdogs and while Anthony Gerrard accepts it will take a monumental effort to bring the trophy back to South Wales, he insists the result is far from a foregone conclusion.

Ill discipline must be curbed says coach

Welsh Coach Warren Gatland has warned his players against any further ill discipline as he prepares his side to take on Scotland in the Six Nations.

Bradley Davies’s sin binning against Ireland last week was just one of a number of yellow cards which have hindered Wales in recent times and Gatland has had enough.

The New Zealander has admitted his warnings have had no effect on the squad and has threatened his players with financial penalties if it happens again.

City of London Sinfonia concert to commemorate Scott's expedition leaves our reviewer cold

ONE HUNDRED years ago five men perished in the teeth of a howling Antarctic blizzard. Swallowed up by the elements they battled so bravely against, they became synonymous with British heroic failure. One man, Captain Robert Falcon Scott, passed into legend.

The tragic tale of the doomed expedition, which left Cardiff dock in June 1910, was played out this week in St David’s Hall by the City of London Sinfonia’s Scott centenary tour, Conquering the Antarctic. But much like the hopeful expedition, the night came close but failed to find final success.

Music. St David's Hall. £10.50.

Captain Scott left Cardiff on his final journey to the South Pole in June 1910. But the expedition was ill-fated: Scott and his companions died on the return journey in March 1912. The classic film Scott of the Antarctic (1947) charts their stoicism and bravery and its compelling atmosphere owes much to Vaughan Williams's music, conjuring up the eerie wide-open spaces of the Antarctic. Here the original film music is heard alongside Vaughan Williams's Symphony No 7 Antarctica, weaving music from the film into a powerful tapestry. St David's Hall. £10.50.

CARDIFF City will be looking to hit the ground running when they take on Derby County on home soil following the two-week international break.

CARDIFF City will be looking to hit the ground running when they take on Derby County on home soil following the two-week international break.

Dave Jones has said every game is a must-win occasion as only eight games remain of the season, with the play-off candidates all pushing for those top two direct promotion spots.

The Bluebirds are four points behind second place Norwich City, but could leapfrog arch-rivals Swansea City who are one point ahead in third if they collect the three points tomorrow.

Two early goals from Frank Lampard and Darren Bent were enough to beat Wales despite an improved Dragons performance after the break.

Two early goals from Frank Lampard and Darren Bent saw Wales suffer another loss in their European qualifying group.

The second half performance was better for Wales, but they remained disappointingly toothless despite matching England’s possession after the break.

If critics accused Gary Speed of being naive in naming Aaron Ramsey captain, they will have had plenty to say about the Wales manager’s ambitious approach against England.

Click to see Penarth man's cheeky Comic Relief tattoo.

Penarth man Mark Quick has decided to do something other than sitting on his backside for Comic Relief - he's had it tattooed instead.

Mr Quick, 25, from Arcot Street, sat for two hours yesterday at Alley Cat tattoo studio to have the Comic Relief pirate Captain Conk inked on his behind.

He said: “Some people think it's amazing and others think I’m an idiot but I don’t really care. I know when I see it, it will remind me of something good I have done for charity.”

As Gary Speed approaches his first competitive game in charge of Wales, the interest in who the former skipper, capped 85 times for his country, will select as his captain is growing.

Swansea City captain Ashley Williams, and his centre-half partner, Aston Villa's James Collins, are the front runners but both men said they were none the wiser in the run up to Saturday's huge European Championship qualifier with England at the Millennium Stadium.

Glamorgan county cricket club arrived in South Africa today in an optimistic mood following a winter of discontent.

The signing of Alviro Peterson resulted in both ex-captain Jamie Dalrymple and coach Matthew Maynard departing.

But as he enters his benefit season, county stalwart Michael Powell was philosophical in an exclusive interview with The Cardiffian.

He said: “These kind of things are a way of life. It is nothing we [the players] can control or get involved with, so I just keep my head down and train.

The competition, which will be held on Saturday March 5, is a 3,500 metre time trial along the Taff River.

Fewer crews will be entering this year's event due to clashes with other events, but event organiser Phil Rees is still expecting 75 boats to battle it out on the Taff.  Teams will be coming from as far away as Pembrokeshire and Bristol.

Captain Fantastic and his Three Funky Beans performed with zest and vigour at Cardiff's Buffalo Bar on Tuesday night, but the enthusiasm in the venue remained on their side of the stage.

Captain Fantastic and his Three Funky Beans performed with zest and vigour at Cardiff's Buffalo Bar on Tuesday night, but the enthusiasm in the venue remained on their side of the stage.

The band, who hail from the Rhondda Valley, played in front of a crowd of about 30 people who clapped politely at the end of each song - but nothing more.

Captain Fantastic and his Three Funky Beans are a pop-rock outfit, resembling a mixture of Razorlight, The Knack, and the Arctic Monkeys. Regrettably, the combination is far from fantastic.

A church sees its attendance spike when a Polish priest takes over

A Cardiff church has been saved thanks to the support of Polish Catholics from all over South Wales since it was left without a priest at the end of 2008.

After Father Fahey died on Christmas Eve 2008 the church had no priest until Polish priest Father Bogdan Wera stepped in. St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Grangetown now regularly attracts 400 Poles as well as 200 English speakers on any given weekend.

DOROTHY L Sayers once said: "The art of change ringing is peculiar to the English, and, like most English peculiarities, unintelligible to the rest of the world."
I went along, albeit to a church in Wales, to see what this peculiar art is all about.
Llandaff  Cathedral is the only church in Cardiff - and one of only two in the whole of Wales - to have a ring of twelve bells, making the Llandaff ringers  one of the most impressive bell-ringing groups around.

England displayed some genuine potential in the Autumn internationals, including a 35-18 dismissal of Australia. Can they build on it in the 6 Nations?

England displayed some genuine potential in the Autumn internationals, including a 35-18 dismissal of Australia.

But England face a challenge before their Six Nations campaign has even started, with injury to their captain, Lewis Moody.

It is a big blow to England coach Martin Johnson, as Moody’s influential leadership and dominating presence will be greatly missed from the starting XV.
