Parking outside Cardiff city centre is becoming increasingly chaotic with vehicles abandoned for months

PARKING outside Cardiff city centre is becoming increasingly chaotic as a lack of enforcement has left the area as a “free for all” for motorists.

Residents have complained there are no meter systems or enforcement officers in two major car parks in Canton, and new housing builds in the area will simply put more pressure on the crowded streets.

The death of a 22-stone sheep was remembered today in a tree planting ceremony

ONE OF Rhiwbina’s most famous residents, Nick Boing was remembered today at a memorial tree planting ceremony in the village’s Park y Pentre. But Nick was no ordinary resident as he was in fact a sheep.

Despite a whipping wind and driving rain, more than 40 residents turned out to remember Nick. 

Resident Mary Clarke, from Pen y Dre, said: “Whatever was going on in this village, Nick came. It really is very important for this village.

THE University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff has the highest number of deaths in Wales compared with the expected level, according to new figures. 

Assembly Members, MPs and residents have expressed their surprise at the “shocking” new figures regarding mortality rates at the Cardiff-based hospital.  The Risk Adjusted Mortality Index (RAMI) also showed 11 out of 17 Welsh district hospitals recorded more deaths than expected last year.

Cardiff's first ever Children's Literature Festival gets off to a flying start

ALMOST everyone remembers a story they heard when they were young, whether it was a parent reading the Wind in the Willows or the latest Harry Potter book at school.


It is clear children love books once they are given the opportunity, which was the aim of the children’s literature festival.


 A new generation of children’s writers have sprung up in the last few years, with young characters which their audience can relate to.

Many of the lighting columns in the city are concrete, and due to environmental facts they are deteriorating and posing a danger to pedestrians. Cardiff council have proposed a scheme to prevent this, which has began with several columns around the civic centre.

THE beleaugured Cardiff Devils face off against Nottingham Panthers twice this weekend, having missed out on the play-offs for the first time in a decade.

The 4-3 loss away against Sheffield Steelers last week meant they could no longer finish in the Elite League top four. The Devils enter the final two games of the season with just one win in their last seven league games.

Tonight’s away game in the East Midlands sees the devils square up against the newly-crowned Elite league champions, the Nottingham Panthers.

Down's syndrome Awareness Week highlights Cardiff University's extensive visual research

A TEAM at Cardiff University has spearheaded research into visual acuity as the condition is highlighted for Down’s Syndrome Awareness Week this week.


Dr Maggie Woodhouse and her research team at the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences have studied visual development among a group of more than 250 children and young people with Down’s syndrome for more than 20 years.


Their work has formed the basis for key recommendations around Down’s Syndrome Awareness Week, which runs from March 18-24.

Small pub owners in Cardiff have hit out at government plans to reduce beer duty as a tactic which will only fuel profits for chains.

SMALL pub owners in Cardiff have hit out at government plans to reduce beer duty as a tactic which will only fuel profits for chains.

On Wednesday George Osbourne announced a one pence reduction in duty per pint of beer in an attempt to protect pubs from going out of business.

But independent pubs have claimed the change will not benefit them, instead allowing larger companies to increase their profit margins.

The proposed £30 million deal between Virodor waste management and E.On energy suppliers is the latest development in the building of a new incinerator off Ocean Way which has faced opposition from local residents from its inception.

A campaign has been launched to ensure Cardiff's elderly spend as little time in hospital as possible.

A CAMPAIGN has been launched in Cardiff to ensure elderly people spend as little time in hospital as possible.

The Wyn Campaign aims to improve the lives of older people in Cardiff and the surrounding area by integrating services across Cardiff Council, the Vale of Glamorgan Council and the University Health Board.

It focuses on preventative support and providing care at home for the elderly by bringing together frontline staff from the health, social care and voluntary sector.

LIBRARIES in Cardiff will reduce their opening hours by one day a week next month.

The changes will affect 12 out of Cardiff’s 16 full-time libraries and will come into effect on April 1. Nearby libraries will close on different day, with none of the branch libraries closed on Saturdays.

More than 500 people have signed a petition against the proposed closure in Rhiwbina.

A memory cafe has been set up by the Alzheimer’s Society for people from ethnic minorities in Cardiff suffering from dementia.

THE MEMORY cafe in the Butetown History and Arts Centre aims to provide a safe and relaxed environment where people who are affected by dementia can socialise and share their experiences.

The cafe has been set up in conjunction with Diverse Cymru and focuses on the area’s ethnic minority communities who lack awareness about dementia and dementia support.

A resident group has called for a miniature farm to be set up to help save abandoned and malnourished ponies found in Cardiff woodland

PONIES found abandoned and malnourished in Cardiff woodland have been rounded up by the Council after a campaign by concerned residents.

Locals started an action group to provide food and medical care for the ponies, which were found in Plymouth Woods, although they were too late for at least two of the horses. One – nicknamed Bobby – had to be put down by vets earlier this month while a mare was found dead the following week.

A LAST-MINUTE decision to postpone a £3.4 million investment on the Emergency Unit at University Hospital of Wales (UHW) has been made due to the service facing exceptional demand.
 
Emergency units across Wales are dealing with a record number of patients with UHW, for instance, seeing a 25 per cent increase since last year. As a result remodelling work, which was due to begin yesterday, has been shelved until May.
