Cardiff has six Community councils including Old St Mellons and Radyr

LLANDAFF residents may put in a bid for their village to have its own community council, so they can have more control over services in their area.

If successful, residents would have the power to raise money locally to spend on facilities such as bus shelters, allotments, street lighting, war memorials and public toilets.

A community council is equivalent to a parish council. It can levy a charge on each household in the area through the main billing authority (Cardiff Council).

Wales Policy Officer Owen Hathway lashed out at Leighton Andrews, Assembly Minister for education and skills, after he threatened to use his ministerial position to close Llanrumney High School.

Mr Andrews claimed the school had been used as a “political football” for far too long.

The Cardiff International White Water (CIWW) at the International Sports Village in Cardiff Bay offers a wide range of activities, from thrilling white water rafting to calmer runs for flat-water paddlers.

The centre is not just for experts and offers a wide variety of courses which promote wider local participation.

Residents in Butetown have slammed Cardiff Council’s decision to accept the proposal for a wakeboard and water-ski-park in Atlantic Wharf.

The proposal to install the water sports park at East Bute Dock, off Atlantic Wharf in Cardiff Bay, was given the green light by councillors on Wednesday afternoon.

There had been hundreds of complaints from residents in the apartments around the dock in the lead up to Wednesday’s planning meeting. But local opposition did nothing to dissuade the committee.

The proposed closure of Maindy Bowling Green has provoked fierce opposition from members, who say they are ready to battle the council over the issue.

CARDIFF Council’s decision to close one of the city’s biggest bowling greens has been met with fierce opposition. 

Maindy Bowling Green has organised a petition opposing the closure of the club, and has already received 240 signatures. It is one of six bowling greens facing closure and will save the council £22,000.

Cardiff Council's Cabinet are having to propose some very difficult choices at a difficult time for the city's finances.

But let's not forget that they are having to do this because of the cuts being handed down from the Tory-Lib Dem government in Westminster, not to mention the massive pressures that the Council is expected to face in coming years as a result of policies like Tory-Lib Dem bedroom tax.

Cardiff Council have proposed a plan to expand the Jasmine Enterprise Centre in Ely, to bring more services under one roof.

CARDIFF council has planned to merge a number of services into Enterprise Centre hubs in a bid to cut down council office expenses.   

The Jasmine Enterprise Centre, Ely, is just one of a number of centres which will have to find space for these proposed plans. Ely library, housing office and reception for the police and fire services will all be moved there.

Peter Bradbury, councillor for Caerau, said: "The centre is currently a fantastic resource and I hope this will make it an even better resource."

Residents campaigned outside Splott Pool last night to try to keep the community facility open in the face of Cardiff Council cuts.

CARDIFF Council has proposed a vast amount of cuts to public services, and some communities are taking action in hope to prevent this from happening.

The closure of Splott Pool has come as a big surprise to many residents, and yesterday evening they came together to demonstrate their anger at the loss of an important community asset.

Anna White, 28, Railway Street, said: “It’s the oldest pool left in the community and its part of the heritage of Splott.

Inner city hit hard as ticketing makes the Council almost £2 million last year

Parking tickets are being issued more than once every five minutes in Cardiff, The Cardiffian can reveal.

Cardiff council issued more than 66,000 parking tickets in the city during the past year, making the authority an income of almost £2 million.

But drivers are twice as likely to get a parking ticket in Cathays than in any other part of the city, it has emerged. Tickets are handed out once every 13 minutes in Cathays, but only once every three weeks in Radyr.

Cardiff councillors have hit out at the number of Freedom of Information requests made to them by member of the public, despite admitting they don't know how much they cost to process.

Cardiff Council has dealt with almost 4,000 Freedom of Information (FOI) requests during the past three years, according to official figures.
But the authority has admitted it has no idea how much money it spends complying with the law.

The council received 3,888 questions they were legally required to answer between January 2009 and February 2012. Around half of the questions were sent last year in 2011.  

The FOI Act 2000 requires public bodies to answer questions as part of a formal legal procedure, usually within 20 working days.

Prayers at the beginning of Cardiff Council meetings could be a thing of the past following a High Court ruling today.

In a test case which could affect councils across England and Wales, Mr Justice Ouseley ruled a Devon council acted unlawfully by saying prayers as part of their formal meetings.

South Wales Police suggested last October that people who want entry into venues with the ID system will have to allow the club to scan their driver’s licence and in some cases, fingerprints.

The RREEL action group (Rumney Rec and Eastern Leisure) made an application for a judicial review on March 21, disputing the council's decision not to award village green status to the green space in Llanrumney.

The appeal follows the result of a public inquiry chaired by independent inspector QC Leslie Blohm, who campaigners say ignored evidence from residents.

Youth sports clubs have warned that Cardiff Council's decision to charge for the use of sports pitches by youth teams will punish children in poorer areas.

New plans set out in this year's budget proposal to charge £30 per year for under 11s teams and £50 for 11 to 18s have been opposed by clubs and councillors.

Five Mountain Ash trees were planted in Parc y Pentre, Rhiwbina, to replace those which were destroyed by vandals in October last year.

A further two were also planted to replace those which were badly damaged or had simply died.

Cardiff Council Parks department planted the trees that had been funded by Rhiwbina residents.

Residents raised the money after the Council said they could not afford to replace them.

Earlswood Rangers of Rumney are planning to put a petition of local residents to the council in September, because they have to spend hours clearing their pitch on Greenway Park before they can play on it.

The horses are thought to belong to members of the traveller community residing at Shire Newton Park in Trowbridge. They have caused a problem on and off in the area for around 50 years.

Radyr and Morganstown Community Council are asking for the increase just a few months after Social Justice and Local Government Minister Carl Sargeant announced a 1.4 per cent cut to council budgets across Wales.
