Police in Cardiff continue their search for Ben Thompson, rugby fan from Haverfordwest

Police in Cardiff are continuing their search for missing man Ben Thompson.

            Volunteer search teams, made up of friends and family of the rugby fan from Haverfordwest, gathered at the Sand Martin pub on Leckwith Road in Canton this morning to launch what could be the last desperate search. Mr Thompson disappeared in Cardiff after attending the Wales v Ireland Six Nations match on Saturday.

Newport Council propose a protection of the green belt to the northeast of Cardiff, to avoid merging between the two cities

Cardiff and Newport councils are in agreement on creating a green belt around the northeast of the capital to keep the cities separate.

But while this may stop the cities from physically merging, the proposed regional regeneration will see the cities grouped together under the South East Wales City Region.

The green belt requested by Newport council would ensure the proposed build of 2,000 new homes in Pontprennau, which is part of Cardiff council’s Local Development Plan (LDP) preferred strategy, don’t encroach into Newport.

MICROBREWERIES have seen resurgence in the UK in recent years, and in Cardiff, Zero Degrees is offering home-brewed beer with an international twist.

The microbrewery and restaurant, a stone’s throw from the Millennium Stadium, is brewing internationally influenced beer in a chic and comfortable setting. The bar offers a wide array of beers, from their flavoursome American-style Pale Ale to their dark, Czech-style black lager.

Touch Trust, a disabled charity, protested outside Cardiff County Hall today against the proposed 100 per cent cut to their funding.

PROTESTERS gathered outside Cardiff county hall today to protest against a £15,000 budget cut to the disabled charity Touch Trust.

Cardiff Council’s draft budget proposal set out a one hundred per cent cut to the group’s yearly funding. The money is used to rent a purpose-built suite at Wales Millennium Centre, where they offer activities and help to disabled people and their families.

Cardiff Council outlines cuts which will impact sports, leisure, culture and charity organisations.

CARDIFF Council have had their budget cut by £25million this year causing a cut in council-funded services.

Although the final budget is yet to be published in full, announcements to services in the city that will be reduced or axed have already been released.

Cuts have had to take place across the board, but Sports, Lesiure and Culture have been most hard hit. These cuts include the closure of Splott pool, the selling of Flat Holm Island and the closure of the Big Weekend event.

A Cardiff pub has got together with a top South Wales brewery to create a special spring ale.

The Pen and Wig on Park Grove is now serving O-Dewi Sant courtesy of Otley Brewery in Pontypridd after the pub's manager had the opportunity to visit the brewery and choose his ingredients for the beer.

Cardiff company BCB launches new air cannon in fight against piracy

Wales is home to some of the most notorious pirates in history and Captain Morgan, Black Bart and Howell Davies are infamous for the havoc they wreaked on the high seas.

But in recent years a new golden age of piracy has begun with modern-day pirates attacking commercial shipping routes and taking hostages for ransom. Last year 30 ships and up to 700 hostages were held by pirates, and this is costing the world economy between $7-10 billion a year.

Papergirl Cardiff offers free artwork on two wheels

A unique art project is once more taking to the streets to share original artworks around Cardiff.

Papergirl Cardiff is a free event which looks to combine art and cycling. The organisers are collecting works by artists from across South Wales, which will then be distributed across Cardiff by volunteers on bicycles, who will give away the pieces to members of the public.

The event originated in Berlin and similar Papergirl events have since taken place in cities around the world, including San Francisco, Brisbane and Manchester.

New £770,000 grant from Welsh Government aims to help poorer pupils with school uniforms

Teachers' unions in Wales are united in their support of the Welsh Government’s announcement of a continuation of the uniform grant scheme.

The scheme was introduced in 2007-8 and low-income families were entitled to £97.50 for school uniforms for the school year. As of 2012/13 these families can claim up to £105 for uniforms.

Questions are raised over access to NHS dentists in Cardiff

Only 10 per cent of dental surgeries in Cardiff are currently accepting new NHS patients, with waiting lists in some areas running at more than two months.

This comes after a report by the Welsh Liberal Democrats revealed only 37 per cent of dentists across Wales were accepting new patients, with waiting lists on the increase across the country.

A drama group for young teenagers is performing An Act of Murdertonight at the Llanover Hall Arts Centre on Romilly Road. It's an interactive whodunit where the audience influences the outcome by deciding where the investigation should go. It starts at 7.30pm and is £5 for adults and £3 for concessions.

Unite union members move closer to action over lack of safety and job security

Cardiff petrol stations have warned of widespread panic buying after the threat of a strike by fuel tanker drivers moved a step closer.

More than 2,000 members of the Unite union at seven companies across the UK yesterday voted overwhelmingly in support of their first national campaign of action for over a decade.

Hannah Blythyn, regional campaigns co-ordinator for Unite Wales, said: “After a whole year of trying – and failing – to bring stability to the UK fuel distribution sector, tanker drivers feel they have no option but to strike.

Weekend event expected to boost local economy 

The first official Doctor Who convention in 29 years is set to take place in Cardiff this weekend and traders are expected to see a boost to the local economy.

Writers, actors and the Doctor himself, Matt Smith, will be on hand to meet up to 1,500 fans and sign autographs. There will also be interactive demonstrations of pyrotechnics and prosthetics from technicians and a host of exclusives for Whovians.

Alex Cuthbert and Lloyd Williams welcomed back to team after Grand Slam victory

The Cardiff Blues welcome two Grand Slam stars back to the starting line-up to face the Llanelli Scarlets tomorrow evening.

Alex Cuthbert, winning try-scorer against France, is back on the wing while Lloyd Williams starts at scrum-half. Unfortunately, the four other Blues representatives in Wales’s Grand Slam winning side will not be running out against the Scarlets with Leigh Halfpenny out with a dead leg, Gethin Jenkins out with a shoulder injury and Jamie Roberts, who has not been picked for the match.

1000 new homes to be created in the next five years as part of Cardiff Council strategy

Cardiff Council are committed to building at least 1000 new homes in the next five years following the approval of the Housing Strategy for 2012-2017.

Speaking at last night's full meeting of Cardiff Council, Judith Woodman, Cabinet Member for Communities, Housing and Social Justice, outlined the details of the plan, saying the strategy create new jobs and contribute to Cardiff's thriving and prosporous economy.

She said: "We will continue to develop interventions to help those at risk of poverty and on low incomes.

RealTCut are the 100th project from the university to win European Union research funding award

Cardiff University’s School of Engineering has secured funding of £1.2 million for a project to simulate real-life surgery and reduce patient risk.

“RealTCut” is the 100th Cardiff University project to win an award under the European Union’s prime research funding scheme. The project has been awarded the grant by the European Research Council Starting Independent Grants scheme to develop it’s work on reproducing the effects of surgical cutting in real time.

Audio interview with Angela Davies from Sing With Us

A woman who suffered with cancer for six years without being diagnosed has been given a new lease of life as a member of the Tenovus charity choir.

Angela Davies, 51, of Caerphilly, was given an emergency operation in 2007 after suffering from cancer for six years without doctor's picking it up, until an off-duty GP spotted it.

“Because it was so long being diagnosed I was then diagnosed with secondary cancer, which is inoperable,” said Mrs Davies.

Persistence pays off as Cardiff garden gets funding

A Cardiff community garden will be viewed by 20,000 people after it was selected for next month’s Royal Horticultural Society show.

April 20 will see the debut of the garden, named “A growing community”, in Bute Park, as part of the first RHS show of the season.

The show will stay open throughout the weekend, and then the garden will be dismantled and rebuilt on Station Road in Llandaff North in an alcove by the main road.

John Griffithsm AM launched Flytipping Action Wales Spring Clean campaign to warn against the illegal dumping of waste and highlight the significant financial cost fly-tipping has to the economy. It will target fly-tipping hotspots around Wales in an attempt to educate residents.
