Poppadums, on City Road, have applied for a licence to open a takeaway along with their new restaurant but some fear this may cause the litter problem on the road to escalate.

An application to allow a restaurant to act as a takeaway is currently being considered by Cardiff Council, despite a long-running litter problem.

Pappadums Restaurant, City Road, is due to open soon, and the owners have applied to remove one of the conditions of their original planning application. The document states: "No sale of hot food for consumption off the premises shall take place from the premises."

The council's waste education team held a road show in Queen Street today, where they provided information about dealing with the problem and handed out portable ashtrays.

There was a 25 per cent increase in streets affected by smoking-related litter in Cardiff between 2008-9 and 2009-10, though dropping a cigarette butt can earn you an on the spot fine of £75.  Other main sources of litter are animal waste and food wrappers.
