The Welsh Government will invest £100 million in the under-performing life science industry in Wales.

The watershed announcement, which committed £25 million of investment this year, was made at the beginning of the Welsh Government’s two-day BioWales conference in the Millennium Centre. 

Experts have hailed it as a landmark week for science investment in the country.

A new report has highlighted the decline in Wales's ability to attract investment. 

Cardiff is bucking the Welsh trend for poor inward investment after American firm Conduit announced plans to create 600 new jobs in the area.

This follows the publication of the Welsh Affairs Committee’s report on inward investment in Wales, which highlighted the steady decline in Wales ability to attract inward investment. In the early 90’s, Wales accounted for 15% of all investment in the UK, but by 2010 this had dropped to just 6%.

A new Welsh Development Agency should be established to help improve Wales’s economy, a Select Committee report has recommended.

The previous agency was scrapped five years ago, but this move was criticised by the Welsh Affairs Committee who said the closure of the WDA has reduced the visibility of Wales in the global market.

Recent reports have indicated the duty could rise two per cent above the rate of inflation when the Chancellor announces the Budget tomorrow. This could add 10p to the price of a pint of beer.

Devolution has failed to save Wales's struggling economy, according to one of the country's top business figures.

In an interview with the The Cardiffian, David Rosser, director of the Confederation of British Industry Wales, said poor economic performance was probably the greatest disappointment of devolved government so far.

His comments come just two days before voters decide on whether to shift more power from Westminster to the Assembly.
