Education Minister Leighton Andrews has announced plans to introduce a banding system for Welsh primary schools will be delayed until 2014.

The Welsh Assembly Government has delayed plans to give primary schools a formal ranking until 2014.

Speaking to the Senedd, Education Minister Leighton Andrews,  announced the delay, saying it would allow time for new literacy and numeracy plans to be introduced. The delay will be viewed by many opponents as a policy u-turn, as it was one of the party’s key manifesto committments in their efforts to drive up education standards.

A governor for a proposed new Cardiff high school has asked for a September planning deadline to be extended while an appeal from residents goes forward.

Cardiff Council has been asked to apply for a longer period to gain planning approval for the Eastern High School on Rumney Recreation Ground, Llanrumney, which would combine Llanrumney High School and Rumney High School.
