Cardiff's first ever Children's Literature Festival gets off to a flying start

ALMOST everyone remembers a story they heard when they were young, whether it was a parent reading the Wind in the Willows or the latest Harry Potter book at school.

It is clear children love books once they are given the opportunity, which was the aim of the children’s literature festival.

A new generation of children’s writers have sprung up in the last few years, with young characters which their audience can relate to.

Renowned trombonist Mark Nightingale joins the Capital City Jazz Orchestra on stage.

THE LIGHTS were low and everyone was sat around tables with drinks in hand as the conductor of the Capital City Jazz Orchestra counted the big band in. He walked off the stage clicking his fingers, and the power of full brass sound hit the audience.

The St David’s Hall Lounge is hardly a jazz dive but the open space and comfy seating lends itself to a big band sound.

This evening was for fans of Buddy Rich or Count Basie's big orchestra sound of the '50s and '60s.

Plans to hide cameras on staff at the alcohol treatment centre have been met with privacy concerns

PLANS to shock Cardiff binge-drinkers by filming them in the Alcohol Treatment Centre have been met with concern.

The Welsh Government refused permission for hidden cameras to tape drunken revellers at an alcohol treatment centre in Ebenezer Church in the city centre when it opened last year to relieve pressure on local hospitals.

But ministers have now given staff the green light to wear matchbox-sized cameras to record drunk people in the centre from next weekend.

Everyman Theatre Company brings Shakespeare back to basics at Chapter Arts Centre

THERE have been countless adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays across the spectrum of theatre and beyond, so it is hard to make any one particular version stand out.

It is certainly true that this play came up against the same dilemma. Not only did the Everyman Theatre Company attempt a Shakespeare play, but they went for Hamlet, perhaps one of the most-loved of all.

They handled this monumental task not with modern special effects, with dramatic staging or with contemporary dance theatrics, instead the innovation came in the novelty of going back to basics.

While this is a sad situation for those who want out, people may begin to think twice before tying the knot.

Tress's West Wales landscapes refuse to be quaint.

PEMBROKESHIRE based artist, David Tress, has featured the West Wales landscape in his latest work, currently in exhibiton at Albany Gallery.

The London-born artist moved to Wales in his early twenties and was inspired to reject modernism but influence his landscapes with his early abstract art.

In the early days, Tress painted highly-detailed and realistic landscapes. Light was always central. One of his famous earlier works, Winter Sun, places a darkening sky behind brightly illuminated stone walls of a cottage. It could be a photograph.

Our reporters find out what life was like during the English Civil War at the living museum in Treharris.

If you think history is dull, then you’ve never been to Llancaiach Fawr Manor in Treharris, just a half hour’s drive from Cardiff. Actors at the house make its past come to life, taking visitors back to the Civil War in 1645.

The manor was then home to Colonel Edward Prichard, Commissioner of Array for the Royalist cause in Glamorganshire, and his family. Visitors can see how the wealthy Prichards lived during this period by walking through an interactive museum before entering the house itself.

Roald Dahl's classic children's tale comes to life in the theatre in Cardiff this week.

The classic Roald Dahl children’s story is famous as a book and a film, but is opening at the New Theatre as a play this evening, with promising reviews so far.

On a side note, the book was number 56 on a list of the 100 most challenged books compiled by the American Library Association, due to concern it promotes disobedience and mysticism.

Seats are from £9. There will also be a matinee on Saturday at 2pm.
