TV fans flock to see old birds in Cardiff's New Theatre

IT HAS been more than a decade since the last series of Birds of a Feather ended in 1999.
Now the original stars Pauline Quirke, Lesley Joseph and Linda Robson have reunited for a stage show. Characters Sharon, Tracey and Dorien have aged along with the audience, but have swapped cameras for the stage and are now at the New Theatre in Cardiff until Saturday.

Bob Kingdom's An Audience with the Duke of Windsor performs at the Welsh College of Music and Drama

AN AUDIENCE with the Duke of Windsor came to Cardiff for one night only on Wednesday at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

The show features Cardiff-born actor Bob Kingdom as an aging Edward VIII, who became known as the Duke of Windsor after he abdicated in 1936 to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson.

As part of Go Green Week 2013 there were talks and demonstrations in the university grounds, as well as a residential yurt.

 

Environmental action has been taking place in the grounds of Cardiff University as part of a national initiative called Go Green Week.

The scheme is targeted towards schools and universities, and aims to raise awareness of pressing issues such as climate change and sustainability.

The People and Planet society at Cardiff University have organised the Go Green Week and have put on a range of demonstrations and talks, as well as collaborating with the Vegetarian and Vegan society to promote an event called Meat Free Monday.

A monster hit from the start, the production received three Olivier Awards – for Best Revival, Best Director and Best Designer – and transferred to the West End where it enjoyed a two-year season before opening on Broadway and winning an unprecedented number of accolades including four Tony Awards.

Shakespeare’s audiences can often expect a tale of family feuds and love at first sight, featuring a witty jester and a bit of cross dressing confusion; in these respects As You Like It delivers on all counts.

Set in Duchy, the story follows the romance of Orlando and Rosalind who meet in court and fall in love instantly. Soon after Orlando is exiled by his brother, Oliver, while Rosalind is exiled by her uncle, Duke Frederick.

Frankie Borg has the chance to bring more sporting success to Cardiff this weekend when he fights Merthyr Tydfil's Luke Osmond.

Cardiff-born boxer Frankie Borg could help Wales get a double sporting whammy tomorrow, as he is tipped to take the British Master title. 

With Wales hoping to take their third Grand Slam in seven years on the same day, it seems Saturday will be a day for Welsh sporting success. 

The Welsh super middleweight will meet Merthyr Tydfil boxer, Luke Osmond, at Newport Leisure Centre this Saturday.

When it comes to choosing a school production, a drama teacher can’t go far wrong with Oliver! Lionel Bart’s Dickens-inspired musical. But one Cardiff school put a different spin on this classic, translating the script and songs for a Welsh performance.

Founded in 1913, Clark's Original Pies has become a Cardiff institution producing hearty pies according to family recipes for almost 100 years.

Stamped with the CLARPIE seal of approval, Cardiff-based Clark’s Original Pies has become a Welsh institution in its own right.

Clark’s Original Pies was founded by Mary Clark in 1913, when she her husband Arthur and their children moved to the capital.

The first home of the legendary pie creators was at 93 Donald Street, Roath, but the success of the shop was short lived, as it was soon forced to close down due to meat rationing in the First World War.

After back-to-back wins, the Cardiff Devils are hoping to stick to their winning ways in Saturday's match versus Coventry Blaze.

Cardiff hockey fans will be reminded of things beyond sport when the Devils meet Coventry Blaze in the Bay tomorrow evening.

A minute’s silence is scheduled before the match for Todd Dutiaume, player-coach of the Fife Flyers, whose wife Kelly, 38, died suddenly at the end of last month while pregnant with twins.
The Devils will also stage a bucket collection for funds to support the family with help from Kate Lyle, wife of goalie Steve Lyle, and others among the players’ wives and girlfriends.

Wales's rising star of middle distance running will be the only Welshman travelling with Team GB to the World Indoor Championships in Istanbul this weekend.

Joe Thomas will be Wales’s sole representative this weekend as he strives for a podium finish and to build on a scintillating period of form.

The 800m runner’s star has soared during a winter season which has seen him record six successive lifetime bests and slash the Welsh 800m record in Stockholm by almost a second, with a time of 1.46.33, making him the fourth fastest man this year in the event.

Maria has been running signing sessions in Cathays for four years and says babies who "sign" at an early age learn to talk earlier and are likely to have a higher IQ in later life.

It is a dreary Monday morning in Cathays but inside Café Junior, where Maria McGuigan runs sing and sign session, the mood is bright. Just under a dozen toddlers sit on the carpeted floor, with their parents, excitedly waiting for the music to start.

Signing is popular with parents who want to communicate with their children before they begin to speak. The signs are based on British Sign Language and adapted for small hands. They allow children to connect a word they hear to something visual, speeding language development.

A Cardiff Jiu-Jitsu instructor is celebrating after winning one of his club’s five medals at a national tournament last weekend.

Franklin Lewis, of Heath, won gold in one of the black belt competitions at the Randori nationals, an annual event organised by The Jitsu Foundation. Three of his students, including his brother Winston, also came away with medals at the end of the gruelling weekend, which involved intense training as well as competition.

AS a newly elected Margaret Thatcher sweeping into the Commons chamber for the first time in recent Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady, Alexandra Roach was surrounded by male actors.

“I felt very female there, as all the extras were men and they were all in brown with me in my bright blue dress,” she said.

The 24-year-old Welsh actress had to put up with chauvinist jibes just as Margaret Thatcher did though she didn’t deal with it quite like the Prime Minister.

Four years ago, award-winning poet Mab Jones stood up to perform her first gig at Cardiff’s Shot in the Dark, City Road. Three gigs later she found herself in the semi-finals for Radio 4’s National Poetry Slam, and shortly after that, in the semi-finals of the Funny Women awards.

Now she has a busy schedule working as a full time poet after quitting her call centre job last year. Before Christmas she performed eight gigs in one week.

Riverside welcomes in the Year of the Dragon in style with a traditional Lion Dance show.

A dreary Sunday morning in Riverside was broken with the rapid and loud noises of a banging drum and cymbals yesterday.

Chinese and locals alike were at Tudor Street for a Lion Dance show in celebration of Chinese New Year.

The lion dance is commonly seen during Chinese New Year to ward away the evil spirit “Nian”, which brings bad luck to businesses.

A 77-year-old man who was forced to live in a garden shed has today been found a new home.

A 77-year-old man who was forced to live in a garden shed has today been found a new home.

Frank Soloman, a proud former steelworker from Splott, was reduced to an undignified existence in a shed in his daughter’s back garden in Carlisle Street while his family desperately attempted to secure him a council house.

Daughter Debbie Olney said: “Cardiff Council Housing Association didn’t care one bit. I hassled them for months and no one offered any help at all. It was heartbreaking."

A 50-year-old grandmother will climb Macchu Picchu in April to raise money for a Cardiff charity.

Teresa Chard aims to raise £3,000 for Vision 21, a Fairwater-based charity that helps disabled people towards employment.

Mrs Chard will fly from Cardiff to Peru by herself to begin the four-day, 45km trek up the 4,200m trail to the Inca ruins on April 28. Her attempt is all the more remarkable given she suffers from two slipped discs in her back.
