MOST children probably dream of running away and joining the circus at some stage, but for some the dream becomes a reality.

NoFit State is a Cardiff-based circus company founded in 1986 by five friends. Since then it has become the UK’s leading large-scale contemporary circus company, producing professional touring productions as well as a wide variety of community, training and education projects.

Over the last five years NoFit State have performed in 15 different countries, played to audiences of over 250,000 and won numerous awards along the way.

The Cardiffian looks back over nearly 200 years of Irish influence in the city ahead of St Patrick's Day

WE SEE dragons a lot in Cardiff. The beast proudly flown on the Welsh flag is a reminder of the country’s national pride and heritage. But another symbol, less easily spotted on St Mary Street, also means a lot to the city.

This weekend will be the exception: you can expect to see shamrocks everywhere when the city is wreathed in green for St Patrick’s Day on Sunday. But we haven’t just adopted the day as an excuse for a booze-up. Wales has historic links with Ireland, and its capital was built by Irish hands.

IN RECENT years, St Patrick’s Day has been transformed from being a simple celebration of Irish culture into the year’s biggest party.

The Guinness-fuelled festival is now embraced not just by the Irish, but also by the millions of people worldwide who claim Irish ancestry. In the US, it is estimated 46 per cent of the population celebrated St Patrick’s Day in some way in 2012, with 20 per cent of the population marking the event by having a drink or two.

Sexism still undermining women despite the celebration International Womens' Day

International Women’s Day marks the celebration of women all over the world and their independent but despite the massive developments which have taken place to make what was a man’s world equally a women’s, there is still one prevalent issue which undermines all the good work which has been done.
Sexism is something which is not seen as a problem to many but a comment dismissed as a joke or banter can seriously affect the image and respect directed towards women and sets a tone and a precedent of how women can be treated by men.

Results of a survey conducted by Cardiff and Aberystwyth Universities and Environment Agency warns extreme weather is here to stay


Results from a new survey have revealed 88 per cent of Wales now accept the world’s climate is changing. Although we are known for our rain not even the most fool-hardy of us could deny that our weather is changing. Last summer’s washout continued into winter, plunging the Welsh capital into transport chaos as red alert snow statuses turned into flood warnings. A nationwide announcement from the Environment Agency warns the floods and droughts of the last year are here to stay.

A couple of Cardiff groups have created a map plotting where food does and can grow in the city.

The allotment is the usual haunt of the green-fingered gardener, but two Cardiff-based community groups are about to change all that.

Farm Cardiff and Orchard Cardiff are leading the drive to get gardening-mad Cardiffians growing their own fruit and vegetables by mapping every potential area where food could, and does, grow. Their aim is to make Cardiff a more sustainable city by getting more food grown locally by communities.

Cardiff churches dubbed 'The Magnificent 7' offer shelter to the city's homeless.

A group of churches in Cardiff, nicknamed the Magnificent Seven, open their doors to homeless people every night providing warm food and a place to stay.

Homelessness receives great publicity over the Christmas period, but is often forgotten in the months after. But the Cardiff Christian Churches Homeless Project, now in its second year, houses homeless people in a different church each night from December to the end of March.

Our reporters find out what life was like during the English Civil War at the living museum in Treharris.

If you think history is dull, then you’ve never been to Llancaiach Fawr Manor in Treharris, just a half hour’s drive from Cardiff. Actors at the house make its past come to life, taking visitors back to the Civil War in 1645.

The manor was then home to Colonel Edward Prichard, Commissioner of Array for the Royalist cause in Glamorganshire, and his family. Visitors can see how the wealthy Prichards lived during this period by walking through an interactive museum before entering the house itself.

BEAT Cymru is encouraging people in Cardiff to wear silly socks to help raise funds as part of Eating Disorders Awareness Week.

The national campaign is taking place this week to improve the understanding of serious mental illnesses and challenge the damaging stereotypes associated with anorexia and bulimia.

It’s last orders at the Rompney Castle. Time has been called on the historic 1850 pub, like so many others in the city.

The Brains Brewery pub on Rumney’s Wentloog Road will soon be boarded up.
