Cardiff company BCB launches new air cannon in fight against piracy

Wales is home to some of the most notorious pirates in history and Captain Morgan, Black Bart and Howell Davies are infamous for the havoc they wreaked on the high seas.

But in recent years a new golden age of piracy has begun with modern-day pirates attacking commercial shipping routes and taking hostages for ransom. Last year 30 ships and up to 700 hostages were held by pirates, and this is costing the world economy between $7-10 billion a year.

RealTCut are the 100th project from the university to win European Union research funding award

Cardiff University’s School of Engineering has secured funding of £1.2 million for a project to simulate real-life surgery and reduce patient risk.

“RealTCut” is the 100th Cardiff University project to win an award under the European Union’s prime research funding scheme. The project has been awarded the grant by the European Research Council Starting Independent Grants scheme to develop it’s work on reproducing the effects of surgical cutting in real time.

Persistence pays off as Cardiff garden gets funding

A Cardiff community garden will be viewed by 20,000 people after it was selected for next month’s Royal Horticultural Society show.

April 20 will see the debut of the garden, named “A growing community”, in Bute Park, as part of the first RHS show of the season.

The show will stay open throughout the weekend, and then the garden will be dismantled and rebuilt on Station Road in Llandaff North in an alcove by the main road.

Bars, hotels and shops enjoyed a rise in profits as 250,000 people flocked to the capital

The Grand Slam was not the only reason for Wales to celebrate this weekend. Figures showing a £10m boost to the Welsh economy. With more than 250,000 people coming to Cardiff to soak up the atmosphere of the final day of this year’s Six Nations’ tournament, the supporters were clearly willing to splash the cash on the big day.

longer opening hours for Cardiff stores will "erode family life" say some Christian groups

 

Churches in Cardiff fear extended trading Sunday hours during the Olympics will further erode Christian identity.

Sunday trading laws will be suspended during the London 2012 Olympics in an effort to make more money from the Games, Chancellor George Osborne is expected to announce in tomorrow’s budget.

Emergency legislation will be rushed through to lift the six-hour limit on opening hours for larger stores across England and Wales on the eight weekends coverings the Olympics and Paralympics.

Statistics have shown 84,947 people in Wales are unemployed, meaning 4.5 per cent of the country are uemployed. 

Ahead of next week's budget announcement, Oxfam Cymru have warned a reduction in the 50p tax rate would "disproportionately harm the poorest people in Wales."

The charity believe if Chancellor George Osborne offers a tax break to higher earners at the same time as cutting working tax credits this will result in a more divided Britain, hitting poor communities in Wales particularly hard. But the South Wales Chamber of Commerce say they believe any reduction tot he 50p rate will have very little impact on the country.

Chief Scientific Advisor for Wales claimed Welsh science is being vastly underfunded by the UK Research Council

The Chief Scientific Adviser for Wales has said Welsh science is missing out on as much as £65m per year.

 Although the Welsh Government has promised funds of £50m for Welsh science over the next five years under the Ser Cymru (Star Wales) scheme, Professor John Harries says much more is within reach.

Haydn James has conducted the massed choirs on the pitch before kick-off at every home international since Wales played their home games at Wembley in the late 1990s.

The Welsh Government will invest £100 million in the under-performing life science industry in Wales.

The watershed announcement, which committed £25 million of investment this year, was made at the beginning of the Welsh Government’s two-day BioWales conference in the Millennium Centre. 

Experts have hailed it as a landmark week for science investment in the country.

Wales's women now face Norway today to compete for seventh place in the competition after two goals from Helen Lander sealed the victory against Hungary.

Wales’s women will face Norway tomorrow for seventh place in the prestigious Algarve Cup after defeating Hungary 2-1 last night to win Group C.

One goal in each half wrapped up the three points as Wales marched on with an unbeaten record, having already seen off hosts Portugal 1-0 and playing out a 0-0 draw with the Republic of Ireland.

Two teachers from Radnor Road Primary School, Canton were mistaken for the Zambian football team when they got off a plane in Lusaka, Zambia. 

It’s great to be welcomed when you visit anywhere but this was something else. As two Cardiff primary school teachers got off their plane in Lusaka, Zambia, thousands of cheering locals lined the runway.

Unfortunately they weren’t there to greet Eoghan Walsh and Angie Carne, teachers at Radnor Road Primary School in Canton, but were expecting the Zambian national football team who had just won the African Nations Cup for the first time.

A special bus appeared in Cardiff city centre yesterday as part of the National Assembly's Vote 2011 Campaign.

A special bus appeared in Cardiff city centre this week as part of the National Assembly's Vote 2011 Campaign.


The Assembly's outreach bus which has been touring around the country since October last year made its last stop in the capital to coincide with the final day before the National Assembly dissolved.


The bus which remained stationary on Queen Street from 11am to 5pm offered people impartial advice on both the March referendum and the forthcoming National Assembly elections on May 5.

Speaking to Cardiff Business Club at St David's Hotel, Havannah Street, Dr Rowan Williams addressed the concept of a "Big Society", and how it offered the possibility of a renewed civic sensibility and cooperative society. He refuted the statement made by Wales' first billionaire Sir Terry Matthews, who said Wales needed more greed.

Jim Cowan, 45, has recently started a new venture in the city centre, which incorporates a leisurely Welsh breakfast with a tour of historical Cardiff.

Mr Cowan said: "I don't want it to be an ordinary history walk about buildings and dates.  I want it to be about bringing the people to life and making it easy to imagine what historical Cardiff was like to live in."

The Government Census questionnaire sent out this month could potentially neglect Welsh speakers who live in England.

One question was left blank on the 2011 Census distributed in England this March, as this enquired whether residents could read, write and understand Welsh.

Only questionnaires sent out in Wales included a question on the Welsh language.

With about 150,000 Welsh speakers currently living in England, this choice by the Office of National Statistics has been questioned.

Former Blues and Wales international on the penultimate Six Nations weekend

Personally I’m gutted for Shane after he hinted this might be his last Six Nations before retiring after the World Cup.

I’m sure he is disappointed he didn’t have the chance to walk out onto the pitch knowing it was his last game. I think it would have helped Wales as well, because it probably would have boosted the players to really turn out a good performance. But maybe if Wales have a good World Cup he might change his mind.
