A closer look at the Cardiff charities benefiting from Red Nose Day.

TODAY marks the 25th anniversary of Red Nose Day, a campaign which has raised more than £600m to help alleviate poverty in the UK and Africa.

The idea behind Comic Relief and Red Nose Day is simply to make the public laugh while they raise money to help people in desperate need.

RED Nose Day, the biennial fundraising event organised by Comic Relief, has been supporting charities and organisations in Cardiff for 25 years.

Cardiff Foodbank

Cardiff Foodbank has been selected as the Welsh charity of choice by Comic Relief and Netmums to receive funding of up to £80,000 on Red Nose Day.

Former Welsh international calls for increase in "stubbornly low" numbers

SPORT Wales chair Professor Laura McAllister said women and girl participation is “stubbornly low” in Wales, in a presentation at the Senedd this morning.

In a question and answer session to mark International Women’s Day former Welsh football international Professor McAllister stressed the importance of sport across all sectors of public life.

Welsh Cavalry moving to Norfolk due to defence cuts


The Welsh cavalry will be moving to Norfolk after spending the last six years stationed abroad, following today’s announcement of the withdrawal of British troops from Germany.
Defence Secretary Philip Hammond announced cuts of 400 Army personnel from Wales as well as the withdrawal of the British Army from Germany by 2019.

Welsh language music is stuck between a rock and a hard place...

Welsh language music is in a precarious position. The clashes between Welsh musicians and the BBC, along with last week’s announcement on Clwb Ifor Bach’s uncertain future, have left the industry stuck between a rock and a hard place.


On January 1, BBC Radio Cymru lost the right to play more than 30,000 Welsh language songs because of a dispute over royalty payments to musicians. Earlier this month, EOS, the group representing the musicians, came to an interim agreement with the radio station allowing them to resume business as normal.

ASSEMBLY Member Andrew R T Davies has called for a tax cut for Wales's wealthiest if the government gets more devolved financial powers.

 

He claimed in his speech to the Assembly last night cutting the 40p tax rate for the highest earners in Wales would encourage business and entrepreneurialism. He argued the move, which would affect about 120,000 people, would create a more active Welsh economy.

More than 200 women danced to show solidarity with the 1 billion women who will be raped or beaten during their lifetime.

More than 200 women staged a flash mob outside Cardiff Central Library yesterday afternoon. They were part of a global effort to attract one billion people to rise on behalf of the billion women on earth who will be raped or beaten in their lifetime. The concept is simple: go out and dance.

People all across the world came together to reclaim Valentines day in an attempt to bring an end to violence against women and Cardiff was no exception.
One Billion Rising is part of the V-Day campaign, the creation of Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues.

Staff shortages putting pressure on midwives around Wales

 

MATERNITY wards in Wales are at risk of falling standards because the Assembly Government has a “lack of urgency” in addressing staff shortages, according to a report.

The Welsh Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee found Welsh hospitals generally provided an appropriate standard of maternity services, resulting in a positive experience for patients. But staff shortages and shrinking resources are likely to put this at risk.

The recent Cardiff Council cuts mean that the Welsh language festival held at Cardiff castle could be under threat.

CARDIFF Council has been accused of neglecting the Welsh language by calling off an annual Welsh festival held in Cardiff Castle.

In recent years the council has funded Tafwyl Festival. But the draft budget produced by the Labour-run council says they will withdraw £20,000 from the free festival, along with setting out wide-ranging cuts to other services.

Menter Caerdydd, a charity promoting the use of the Welsh language in Cardiff, say they will be campaigning to persuade the Council to rethink.

Starting at Chapter Arts Centre in Canton at 8pm and sponsored by the Glee Club, the WUSA aims to uncover the best up-and-coming Welsh comedic talent.  There'll be 6-8 contenstants in a series of heats leading up to semi-finals in July, and a final on July 23 at the Glee Club. Bars, hotels and shops enjoyed a rise in profits as 250,000 people flocked to the capital

The Grand Slam was not the only reason for Wales to celebrate this weekend. Figures showing a £10m boost to the Welsh economy. With more than 250,000 people coming to Cardiff to soak up the atmosphere of the final day of this year’s Six Nations’ tournament, the supporters were clearly willing to splash the cash on the big day.

longer opening hours for Cardiff stores will "erode family life" say some Christian groups

 

Churches in Cardiff fear extended trading Sunday hours during the Olympics will further erode Christian identity.

Sunday trading laws will be suspended during the London 2012 Olympics in an effort to make more money from the Games, Chancellor George Osborne is expected to announce in tomorrow’s budget.

Emergency legislation will be rushed through to lift the six-hour limit on opening hours for larger stores across England and Wales on the eight weekends coverings the Olympics and Paralympics.

Statistics have shown 84,947 people in Wales are unemployed, meaning 4.5 per cent of the country are uemployed. 

Ahead of next week's budget announcement, Oxfam Cymru have warned a reduction in the 50p tax rate would "disproportionately harm the poorest people in Wales."

The charity believe if Chancellor George Osborne offers a tax break to higher earners at the same time as cutting working tax credits this will result in a more divided Britain, hitting poor communities in Wales particularly hard. But the South Wales Chamber of Commerce say they believe any reduction tot he 50p rate will have very little impact on the country.
