Can Welsh music step out from the darkness?

Welsh language music is stuck between a rock and a hard place...

Welsh language music is in a precarious position. The clashes between Welsh musicians and the BBC, along with last week’s announcement on Clwb Ifor Bach’s uncertain future, have left the industry stuck between a rock and a hard place.


On January 1, BBC Radio Cymru lost the right to play more than 30,000 Welsh language songs because of a dispute over royalty payments to musicians. Earlier this month, EOS, the group representing the musicians, came to an interim agreement with the radio station allowing them to resume business as normal.

Clwb Ifor Bach under threat of closure if a buyer is not found

Cardiff's iconic Welsh-language nightclub is under threat of closure after the management board decide new ownership is needed.

CARDIFF’S iconic Welsh-language nightclub might have “served its purpose”, according to a leading music figure.

The comments came after it was announced Clwb Ifor Bach has just four months to find new owners or it will be sold.

The Jasmin Vardimon Company is bringing Yesterdayto the Wales Millennium Centre tonight. The 75-minute piece "combines powerful new choreography with stunning live video and animation" and is a retrospective work marking the company’s 10th anniversary.  It starts at 7.30pm and is for one night only with tickets costing £14.

Roddy Woomble comes to Wales

Roddy Woomble, vocalist from indie band Idlewild played an intimate gig at Clwb Ifor Bach on Tuesday evening.

Roddy Woomble, vocalist from indie band Idlewild played an intimate gig at Clwb Ifor Bach on Tuesday evening.


Flanked by a guitarist, fiddler and a man playing the double bass, Woomble's beautiful voice was heard to great effect in this acoustic set despite the heavy metal music emanating from downstairs at the venue.

Particular highlights included Tangled Wire and My Secret is my Silence. Sat on stage, Woomble's humble interjections between songs seemed appropriate.
