A zebra crossing on a busy road near two schools and a park is “an accident waiting to happen”, according to a Cardiff councillor.

Residents living near Clare Street in Riverside are worried about the safety of the crossing, claiming cars often fail to stop or slow down.

Riverside’s Labour councillor Iona Gordon, together with the party’s council candidate in the ward Cecilia Love, today began compiling signatures for a petition to improve the crossing.

Cardiff cycling campaigners brand council and police leaflets warning of  fines an "intimidation tactic"

A scheme in which Cardiff cyclists have been given leaflets warning they could be fined up to £500 for cycling on the pavement and £2500 for skipping red lights has been called an "intimidation tactic" by cycling campaigners.

The scheme, which was put in place following complaints from residents, is being run by South Wales Police and Cardiff Council to combat the increasing number of collisions involving pedestrians and cyclists on pavements.

Cardiff’s cyclists have celebrated the success of a campaign to keep Bute Park open in the dark

Bute Park has been open for longer since cycling campaigners lobbied to keep it open until 7pm. After a three-month trial, Cardiff Council has agreed to continue the later locking until the clocks go forward in March.

Riverside Councillor Iona Gordon, also a keen cyclist, welcomed the trial’s extension and said it was not just cyclists who were benefiting from the park’s later opening hours. She said: “A lot of pedestrians have said they’ve been using the path often.
