A campaign has been launched to ensure Cardiff's elderly spend as little time in hospital as possible.

A CAMPAIGN has been launched in Cardiff to ensure elderly people spend as little time in hospital as possible.

The Wyn Campaign aims to improve the lives of older people in Cardiff and the surrounding area by integrating services across Cardiff Council, the Vale of Glamorgan Council and the University Health Board.

It focuses on preventative support and providing care at home for the elderly by bringing together frontline staff from the health, social care and voluntary sector.

After being forced to break up with her in 1958, Russ Williams hopes to find his ex-girlfriend Gloria to explain his reasons after 55 years.

A CARDIFF man is making an appeal to find his long-lost girlfriend who he was forced to break up with more than 50 years ago.

Russ Williams, 78, of Gabalfa Avenue, Gabalfa, last saw Gloria Parley in 1958 when he was forced to break off their two-year relationship due to work commitments.

Russ first met Gloria in 1956 while he was travelling from Brighton to Cardiff on a train, after visiting relatives. The couple got chatting during the journey which sparked a two-year relationship.

Cardiff council have committed to closing the pay gap between men and women by April

CARDIFF Council pledged to close the pay gap between its male and female employees, although some argue not enough has been done.

Council statistics, revealed in a report put to cabinet last night, show female employees of Cardiff Council earned on average £1.05 less than men in 2011/2012. On a 35-hour week, this is a difference of £36.75, which is almost £2,000 per year.

Plans to hide cameras on staff at the alcohol treatment centre have been met with privacy concerns

PLANS to shock Cardiff binge-drinkers by filming them in the Alcohol Treatment Centre have been met with concern.

The Welsh Government refused permission for hidden cameras to tape drunken revellers at an alcohol treatment centre in Ebenezer Church in the city centre when it opened last year to relieve pressure on local hospitals.

But ministers have now given staff the green light to wear matchbox-sized cameras to record drunk people in the centre from next weekend.

Hundreds of people are expected to protest against the controversial welfare reform outside Cardiff City Hall this Saturday

CARDIFF is preparing itself for the biggest outcry yet against the “Bedroom Tax” which is due to come into force in April.

A protest, organised by lobbyist group Labour Left, will be held outside City Hall in the civic centre this Saturday from 1pm, with hundreds of people expected to take part to voice their opposition to the Westminster Government policy. More than fifty other protests are to be held simultaneously in cities across the UK in what could be the largest opposition movement to the austerity measures yet.

Employees get pay rise despite shop closures across Cardiff

EMPLOYEES from John Lewis and Waitrose in Cardiff have reason to celebrate after being awarded a bonus equivalent to almost nine weeks pay.
From 2012 until now, Cardiff has seen the closure of Peacocks and BHS, Thomas Cook and Barratts going into administration and hundreds of job losses. But the John Lewis Partnership has appeared to ignore the struggles of the high street and gathered profit increases across all outlets. As a result of this fourth consecutive gain, 84,700 partners will receive a bonus of 17 per cent.

The comments came after it was announced Clwb Ifor Bach has just four months to find new owners or it will be sold.

Staff shortages putting pressure on midwives around Wales

 

MATERNITY wards in Wales are at risk of falling standards because the Assembly Government has a “lack of urgency” in addressing staff shortages, according to a report.

The Welsh Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee found Welsh hospitals generally provided an appropriate standard of maternity services, resulting in a positive experience for patients. But staff shortages and shrinking resources are likely to put this at risk.

Prime Minister says people should not need to use foodbanks, while Cardiff foodbanks see increase in customers

Prime Minister David Cameron told Westminster last week the poor, including those in Cardiff, should not need food banks to help them eat.

He said: “Benefit levels are not set at such a low level that people can’t eat, I’m afraid.”

This came as food banks across the country reported unprecedented demand. There is a hidden hunger in our society, and in the Welsh capital Cardiff Food bank are doing their best to tackle it.

Police in Cardiff continue their search for Ben Thompson, rugby fan from Haverfordwest

Police in Cardiff are continuing their search for missing man Ben Thompson.

            Volunteer search teams, made up of friends and family of the rugby fan from Haverfordwest, gathered at the Sand Martin pub on Leckwith Road in Canton this morning to launch what could be the last desperate search. Mr Thompson disappeared in Cardiff after attending the Wales v Ireland Six Nations match on Saturday.

New £770,000 grant from Welsh Government aims to help poorer pupils with school uniforms

Teachers' unions in Wales are united in their support of the Welsh Government’s announcement of a continuation of the uniform grant scheme.

The scheme was introduced in 2007-8 and low-income families were entitled to £97.50 for school uniforms for the school year. As of 2012/13 these families can claim up to £105 for uniforms.

Questions are raised over access to NHS dentists in Cardiff

Only 10 per cent of dental surgeries in Cardiff are currently accepting new NHS patients, with waiting lists in some areas running at more than two months.

This comes after a report by the Welsh Liberal Democrats revealed only 37 per cent of dentists across Wales were accepting new patients, with waiting lists on the increase across the country.

1000 new homes to be created in the next five years as part of Cardiff Council strategy

Cardiff Council are committed to building at least 1000 new homes in the next five years following the approval of the Housing Strategy for 2012-2017.

Speaking at last night's full meeting of Cardiff Council, Judith Woodman, Cabinet Member for Communities, Housing and Social Justice, outlined the details of the plan, saying the strategy create new jobs and contribute to Cardiff's thriving and prosporous economy.

She said: "We will continue to develop interventions to help those at risk of poverty and on low incomes.

The Penylan Care home in Oldwell Court provides an important service for those who live with dementia

Care for the elderly has become a real concern. On Tuesday March 6 charities, care homes and housing providers called on the government to reform social care. They wrote in a letter to the Secretary of State for Health Andrew Lansley how: “Years of underfunding, combined with rising demand have resulted in a social care system that is in crisis: an unfair and confusing postcode lottery which is now facing additional cuts.”

With Google estimating 40% of Welsh businesses are not online, social media surgeries provide a low-key, laid-back setting for individuals and not-for-profit organisations to seek help with their social media queries.

The Social Media Surgeries were originally established as a partnership between  individuals from GuardianCardiff and WalesOnline. After initial success, volunteers were sought to establish new surgeries in different areas of Cardiff.

Founded in 1913, Clark's Original Pies has become a Cardiff institution producing hearty pies according to family recipes for almost 100 years.

Stamped with the CLARPIE seal of approval, Cardiff-based Clark’s Original Pies has become a Welsh institution in its own right.

Clark’s Original Pies was founded by Mary Clark in 1913, when she her husband Arthur and their children moved to the capital.

The first home of the legendary pie creators was at 93 Donald Street, Roath, but the success of the shop was short lived, as it was soon forced to close down due to meat rationing in the First World War.

Craig Buse says he's been the victim of over-zealous police conditions after alleged violence at the Riverbank Inn.

A Cardiff landlord feels he is being pressured out of business by overly strict and unlawful conditions imposed by South Wales’s Police Licensing Department.

Craig Buse, 39, Landlord of the Riverbank Inn in Ely, says he feels he has been discriminated against and has been told by police they want his pub closed. As the result of a licensing review last month after alleged violence at the pub, Mr Buse has been given a list of 14 points to follow, or else he will lose his licence.

Despite a £250,000 Vale of Glamorgan Council pledge to boost a struggling sports club, there are fears the money won't be enough to renovate its premises.

A representative for two sports clubs, which will no longer be homeless after the council agreed to set aside £250,000 for restoration works on a building, claimed the council has not set aside enough money for the project.

Nick Chandler, who represents Penarth gymnastics and amateur boxing club, does not think enough money has been set aside to make St Paul’s church, Arcot Street fit for public use.

He said: “My opinion has always been that £300,000 is the figure needed to get the building back in to full and proper use for both clubs.

A BBC Wales/ICM survey of 1,000 residents across Wales reveals the majority of people oppose the reforms.

Three-quarters of Cardiff residents believe the Welsh government should not implement reforms which would give the private sector a greater role in the NHS.

A BBC Wales/ICM survey of 1,000 residents across Wales asked whether they believed the Welsh Assembly Government should look to implement reforms similar to those being pursued by the Coalition at Westminster.

Respondents were overwhelmingly against the reforms, with just 15 per cent of people in Cardiff and 18 per cent nationally, believing Welsh Labour should seek to reform the NHS.

Protesters hit the streets of Cardiff to oppose the government's 'work-fare' scheme.

Job Centres in Cardiff were targeted on Thursday by a small band of protesters determined to stop what they called “slave labour” in Britain’s supermarkets.

The group protested with a banner and megaphone outside job centres across Cardiff, and also set up camp in the centre of Queen Street and outside the Cathays branch of Tesco.

 They were complaining about the recent government “work fare” scheme to compel Job Seekers to take an unpaid private sector job or face losing their benefits.
