Staff shortages putting pressure on midwives around Wales

 

MATERNITY wards in Wales are at risk of falling standards because the Assembly Government has a “lack of urgency” in addressing staff shortages, according to a report.

The Welsh Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee found Welsh hospitals generally provided an appropriate standard of maternity services, resulting in a positive experience for patients. But staff shortages and shrinking resources are likely to put this at risk.

Speaking at his monthly press conference at the Welsh Assembly ahead of a trade mission to India next month, Mr Jones said it was crucial Wales’s voice was heard in a tough marketplace.

Education Minister Leighton Andrews has announced plans to introduce a banding system for Welsh primary schools will be delayed until 2014.

The Welsh Assembly Government has delayed plans to give primary schools a formal ranking until 2014.

Speaking to the Senedd, Education Minister Leighton Andrews,  announced the delay, saying it would allow time for new literacy and numeracy plans to be introduced. The delay will be viewed by many opponents as a policy u-turn, as it was one of the party’s key manifesto committments in their efforts to drive up education standards.

Wales's First Minister, Rt. Hon Carwyn Jones AM, joined Cardiff's unions in a protest against the cuts in Sofia Gardens.

Wales's First Minister, Rt. Hon Carwyn Jones AM, joined Cardiff's unions in a protest against the cuts yesterday in Sofia Gardens.

The protest, hosted by Wales TUC, saw speeches from union leaders such as Sian Wibilin of Wales TUC and Len McClusky of Unite, as well as Mr Jones.

Unions united at Sofia Gardens, Cardiff, on the same day the Welsh Conservatives held their Spring Conference at the SWALEC Stadium and the Liberal Democrats held theirs at the Barceló Cardiff Angel Hotel.

Cardiff finally celebrated a strong Yes vote in the referendum for further Welsh Assembly powers despite a poor turnout and bureaucratic problems.

Cardiff finally celebrated a strong Yes vote in the referendum for further Welsh Assembly powers despite a poor turnout and bureaucratic problems.

Just 31.3 per cent of registered electors voted and Cardiff was last to announce its results, but those who voted came out strongly in favour of making Wales able to pass laws in devolved areas without Westminster’s approval.

The Cardiff result - a 61.39% majority - was announced late after a partial recount and software problems at the Senedd, which must officially accept the count.

I will be voting Yes in today's referendum. I will do so proud to be Welsh and proud also to be British. I will not be casting my vote for independence for Wales nor for the first step along that route. Rhodri Morgan, the former First Minister, attended the debate at Cardiff University and spoke about the successes of the first twelve years of devolution. He faced opposition from True Wales leader Rachel Banner, campaigning to vote against an increase in powers.
