THE University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff has the highest number of deaths in Wales compared with the expected level, according to new figures. 

Assembly Members, MPs and residents have expressed their surprise at the “shocking” new figures regarding mortality rates at the Cardiff-based hospital.  The Risk Adjusted Mortality Index (RAMI) also showed 11 out of 17 Welsh district hospitals recorded more deaths than expected last year.

Many of the lighting columns in the city are concrete, and due to environmental facts they are deteriorating and posing a danger to pedestrians. Cardiff council have proposed a scheme to prevent this, which has began with several columns around the civic centre.

DISCUSSIONS over a deal to provide heat to Cardiff businesses from the Splott incinerator have been branded a “PR stunt”.

The proposed £30 million deal between Virodor waste management and E.On energy suppliers is the latest development in the building of a new incinerator off Ocean Way which has faced opposition from local residents from its inception.

Police confirm body found in River Ely two days ago is missing rugby fan.

THE BODY found in the River Ely two days ago has now formally been identified as the missing rugby fan Ben Thompson.

South Wales Police said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and his family has been informed.

Ben’s wife Jo has spoken of her relief at coming to the end of what has been an emotional ordeal for the family.
She said: “Losing Ben has left us all devastated but finding him on Tuesday has answered many unanswered questions and given us the chance to say our goodbyes.

After being forced to break up with her in 1958, Russ Williams hopes to find his ex-girlfriend Gloria to explain his reasons after 55 years.

A CARDIFF man is making an appeal to find his long-lost girlfriend who he was forced to break up with more than 50 years ago.

Russ Williams, 78, of Gabalfa Avenue, Gabalfa, last saw Gloria Parley in 1958 when he was forced to break off their two-year relationship due to work commitments.

Russ first met Gloria in 1956 while he was travelling from Brighton to Cardiff on a train, after visiting relatives. The couple got chatting during the journey which sparked a two-year relationship.

Cardiff council have committed to closing the pay gap between men and women by April

CARDIFF Council pledged to close the pay gap between its male and female employees, although some argue not enough has been done.

Council statistics, revealed in a report put to cabinet last night, show female employees of Cardiff Council earned on average £1.05 less than men in 2011/2012. On a 35-hour week, this is a difference of £36.75, which is almost £2,000 per year.

The Welsh Government announced several changes to the cabinet yesterday afternoon via its Twitter account.

THE WELSH Government’s reformed cabinet will start work on new portfolios today after First Minister Carwyn Jones reshuffled his team yesterday afternoon.

The Welsh Government used Twitter to break the news the reform was underway yesterday, in what was the first time a Welsh reshuffle has been announced live on the social networking site.

Among several changes in the cabinet, Lesley Griffiths was replaced as health minister by Cardiff West AM Mark Drakeford.

Plans to hide cameras on staff at the alcohol treatment centre have been met with privacy concerns

PLANS to shock Cardiff binge-drinkers by filming them in the Alcohol Treatment Centre have been met with concern.

The Welsh Government refused permission for hidden cameras to tape drunken revellers at an alcohol treatment centre in Ebenezer Church in the city centre when it opened last year to relieve pressure on local hospitals.

But ministers have now given staff the green light to wear matchbox-sized cameras to record drunk people in the centre from next weekend.

HOMEOWNERS and traders on a busy Cardiff street want a saturation zone restriction on licensed premises due to fears of being overrun with late-night takeaways.

Residents fear Whitchurch Road will “become a kebab street like City Road” as takeaway businesses shut out by the area’s saturation zone spread north. Concerns have heightened due to a new late-night takeaway, ROJ BBQ Restaurant, opening soon.

Hundreds of people are expected to protest against the controversial welfare reform outside Cardiff City Hall this Saturday

CARDIFF is preparing itself for the biggest outcry yet against the “Bedroom Tax” which is due to come into force in April.

A protest, organised by lobbyist group Labour Left, will be held outside City Hall in the civic centre this Saturday from 1pm, with hundreds of people expected to take part to voice their opposition to the Westminster Government policy. More than fifty other protests are to be held simultaneously in cities across the UK in what could be the largest opposition movement to the austerity measures yet.

A popular former hostel is being radically altered to help those with drug and alcohol problems.

A FORMER popular hostel in Cardiff, which is being turned into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre, will not be housing its patients despite residents’ concerns.

The Backpackers building in south Riverside was a popular destination for visitors and members of the surrounding community until it was eventually sold last year.

THE INDEPENDENT Police Complaints Commission has revealed police officers from Cardiff are among those under investigation for malpractice in the handling of domestic violence cases.

A Cardiff woman made a complaint at Fairwater Police Station in 2011 after her partner threatened her, but she was sent home by officers without any action being taken. She was assaulted by her partner two days later.

11 sets of roadworks within a 1km radius are causing severe traffic queues in Roath.

DRIVERS in Roath are not getting anywhere fast at the moment because Cardiff Council is carrying out major roadworks on 11 roads within a 1km radius.

There are major roadworks on the infamous “death junction” at the top of Albany Road and City Road as well as two road improvement works on Shirley Road.

Hamish Douglas, 32, a resident of Shirley Road, said: “There were queues going both ways the entire length of the street this morning. Did they really have to do everything at once?”

A new scheme is being implemented to help reduce the number of fatalities from motorcycle accidents

A NEW “life-saving” scheme to reduce motorcyclist fatalities in Cardiff has been launched after it was revealed motorcyclists are 25 times more likely to be killed compared to other road users.

In Cardiff alone there were 612 motorcycle accidents in 2011, with 242 fatalities.

Launched by Cardiff Council’s road safety team and Road Safety Wales, the Motorcycle CRASH Card Scheme is a new initiative which encourages motorcyclists to carry cards which contain vital information which could be life-saving in the event of an incident.

The prefered bidder for building the incinerator claims complaints about the project are coming from a "loud minority".

THE CONSTRUCTION of an incinerator has caused upset among Splott residents, but officials deny there have been complaints.

Last week Viridor was named as the preferred bidder for the building of the incinerator by Prosiect Gwyrrd and its five local authorities. The search for the construction site of the incinerator started in 2009.

Many Splott residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the preferred bidder being named in the area, and feel they have not had adequate consultation.

Employees get pay rise despite shop closures across Cardiff

EMPLOYEES from John Lewis and Waitrose in Cardiff have reason to celebrate after being awarded a bonus equivalent to almost nine weeks pay.
From 2012 until now, Cardiff has seen the closure of Peacocks and BHS, Thomas Cook and Barratts going into administration and hundreds of job losses. But the John Lewis Partnership has appeared to ignore the struggles of the high street and gathered profit increases across all outlets. As a result of this fourth consecutive gain, 84,700 partners will receive a bonus of 17 per cent.

Business owners say plans to develop Enfys cycle route do not go far enough


COUNCIL plans to develop the Enfys cycle network between Ely and Cardiff city centre have been accused of just “ticking boxes” by local business owners.
Public consultations began this week on the Route 6 proposals to resurface parts of Cowbridge Road East.
While many cyclists have welcomed the plans, businesses on the busy high street have criticised them as unnecessary and ineffective.

Setting off lanterns could be banned in a report by Cardiff Council

CARDIFF Council have put forward a report banning the release of balloons and lanterns.

The Environmental Scrutiny Committee recently wrote a report called “Litter in Cardiff” which looked at a range of litter issues throughout the city. The report included a proposal for a balloon and lantern release policy.

The members on the Scrutiny Committee recommended the council should prevent the release of balloons and lanterns from council-owned land. A number of high-street shops, including Poundland and The Works, have sold the popular novelty item.

The recent announcement of Cardiff as a host port for the world’s premier round-the-world sailing race in 2017/18 has sparked a row between two Cardiff councillors.
The row began on Twitter on Wednesday evening as Plaid Cymru councillor Neil McEvoy tweeted his anger at the announcement saying “£1.5 million for a boat race. No money for vital services. Labour Cardiff Council. #redtories.” This comment sparked a heated debate between himself and Labour councillor Huw Thomas on the social networking site.

Welsh Water's rain recycling scheme launched for Grangetown


EXPERTS in surface water management gathered in Cardiff Bay today for the launch of a revolutionary rainwater-recycling project, along the Taff embankment.
The Greener Grangetown scheme was launched at Welsh Water’s Creating a Water Sensitive Wales seminar chaired by journalist Iolo ap Dafydd at the Norwegian Church. The project will see rainwater recycled through new drainage systems, producing environmental and economic benefits which include water being recycled for household dishwashers and washing machines.

Anonymous chalk message tries to embarrass offenders

AN ANONYMOUS Cardiff resident has taken dog-fouling measures into their own hands following the difficulty of prosecuting offenders.
Messages saying “clean up this mess” have appeared written in chalk next to dog mess in Maitland Park, Bute Park and along Newport Road. The anonymous messages, which have received support on Twitter, came after a spate of resident complaints at Police and Communities Together meetings across the city about law enforcement and dog fouling.
