ASSEMBLY Member Andrew R T Davies has called for a tax cut for Wales's wealthiest if the government gets more devolved financial powers.

 

He claimed in his speech to the Assembly last night cutting the 40p tax rate for the highest earners in Wales would encourage business and entrepreneurialism. He argued the move, which would affect about 120,000 people, would create a more active Welsh economy.

According to Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), a pub closes in South Wales every week. Regulars wonder if cheap supermarket booze, tax and a loss of community are to blame.

It’s last orders at the Rompney Castle. Time has been called on the historic 1850 pub, like so many others in the city.

The Brains Brewery pub on Rumney’s Wentloog Road will soon be boarded up.

Prime Minister says people should not need to use foodbanks, while Cardiff foodbanks see increase in customers

Prime Minister David Cameron told Westminster last week the poor, including those in Cardiff, should not need food banks to help them eat.

He said: “Benefit levels are not set at such a low level that people can’t eat, I’m afraid.”

This came as food banks across the country reported unprecedented demand. There is a hidden hunger in our society, and in the Welsh capital Cardiff Food bank are doing their best to tackle it.

Cardiff South and Penarth MP Stephen Doughty gave a reaction to the budget announcements given at Thursday’s Cardiff Council meeting.

Cardiff Council's Cabinet are having to propose some very difficult choices at a difficult time for the city's finances.

But let's not forget that they are having to do this because of the cuts being handed down from the Tory-Lib Dem government in Westminster, not to mention the massive pressures that the Council is expected to face in coming years as a result of policies like Tory-Lib Dem bedroom tax.

Cardiff Council have proposed a plan to expand the Jasmine Enterprise Centre in Ely, to bring more services under one roof.

CARDIFF council has planned to merge a number of services into Enterprise Centre hubs in a bid to cut down council office expenses.   

The Jasmine Enterprise Centre, Ely, is just one of a number of centres which will have to find space for these proposed plans. Ely library, housing office and reception for the police and fire services will all be moved there.

Peter Bradbury, councillor for Caerau, said: "The centre is currently a fantastic resource and I hope this will make it an even better resource."

Teachers in Wales are being subjected to physical violence and verbal abuse on a daily basis, a survey by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers has revealed.

A third of the school and college staff surveyed claim to have endured punching, kicking and pushing while at work, 25 per cent of whom say they were targeted personally. Another quarter said they had witnessed violence directed at a colleague.

Labour councillors insist Plaid Cymru's new leader can't halt the party's decline

Welsh Labour members say yesterday’s election of Plaid Cymru’s leader Leanne Wood will not be enough to attract voters disillusioned by the Westminster coalition.

Ms Wood, who joined the party in 1991, will be the first female to lead Plaid and will take over from Ieuan Wyn Jones, who has led the party for 12 years.

Calls from drought-hit England for Welsh reservoirs to supply them with water have been rejected by the Envornment Agency Wales.

The Environment Agency has announced it is taking a “Wales first” stance in response to appeals to ease the drought in South East England.

There have been recent calls from individuals and companies for Welsh water agencies to pump water into drought-affected areas in England.

Areas covered by Thames Water, Anglian Water and Southern Water have been hit by a serious drought following below average levels or rainfall over the past two winters.

Cardiff councillors have hit out at the number of Freedom of Information requests made to them by member of the public, despite admitting they don't know how much they cost to process.

Cardiff Council has dealt with almost 4,000 Freedom of Information (FOI) requests during the past three years, according to official figures.
But the authority has admitted it has no idea how much money it spends complying with the law.

The council received 3,888 questions they were legally required to answer between January 2009 and February 2012. Around half of the questions were sent last year in 2011.  

The FOI Act 2000 requires public bodies to answer questions as part of a formal legal procedure, usually within 20 working days.

A rat-infested wasteland that was rejected for development into flats is still provoking anger from Gabalfa residents

Residents are angry over the empty land at the rear of Mynachdy Road, Gabalfa, which is treated as a dumping ground and infested with rats. 

The site, which was originally a coal yard, has been empty for years. Old tires, plastic bottles, glass bottles, domestic goods and food waste are all chucked over the metal gates, which are supposed to prevent such happenings.

Despite the rejection of a planning application to build six blocks of student accommodation on the site, residents remain unhappy.

Assembly members and councillors criticise Westminster for not extending electrification to Welsh railways.

 

The lack of an electrified railway means Wales resembles a third world country, according to Cardiff Council’s Executive Member for Transport and Economic Development.

These comments come after a variety of Welsh politicians and business owners met in Westminster yesterday with the intention of persuading UK Government to fund the electrification of Welsh railways.

 Assembly Member for Cardiff West, Mark Drakeford has spoken out against Cardiff potentially losing £200 million of benefit payments over the next four years.

Cardiff will lose £200 million in benefit payments over the next four years, according to a Cardiff Assembly Member.

Mark Drakeford, AM for Cardiff West, spoke to The Cardiffian ahead of his appearance at the launch of the Wales on the Edge report, which warns one in four people across Wales will be adversley affected by welfare reforms.

The report is the first from Cuts Watch Cymru, which is made up of 17 Welsh poverty charities and voluntary organisations.

Cardiff is bucking the Welsh trend for poor inward investment after American firm Conduit announced plans to create 600 new jobs in the area.

This follows the publication of the Welsh Affairs Committee’s report on inward investment in Wales, which highlighted the steady decline in Wales ability to attract inward investment. In the early 90’s, Wales accounted for 15% of all investment in the UK, but by 2010 this had dropped to just 6%.

Education Minister Leighton Andrews has announced plans to introduce a banding system for Welsh primary schools will be delayed until 2014.

The Welsh Assembly Government has delayed plans to give primary schools a formal ranking until 2014.

Speaking to the Senedd, Education Minister Leighton Andrews,  announced the delay, saying it would allow time for new literacy and numeracy plans to be introduced. The delay will be viewed by many opponents as a policy u-turn, as it was one of the party’s key manifesto committments in their efforts to drive up education standards.
