Statistics have shown 84,947 people in Wales are unemployed, meaning 4.5 per cent of the country are uemployed. 

Ahead of next week's budget announcement, Oxfam Cymru have warned a reduction in the 50p tax rate would "disproportionately harm the poorest people in Wales."

The charity believe if Chancellor George Osborne offers a tax break to higher earners at the same time as cutting working tax credits this will result in a more divided Britain, hitting poor communities in Wales particularly hard. But the South Wales Chamber of Commerce say they believe any reduction tot he 50p rate will have very little impact on the country.

Unemployment figures show 4.5 per cent of population is out of work

The number of unemployed people in Wales has reached 84,947 according to the Office for National Statistics.

The latest figures, which cover the three months leading up to December of last year, mean 4.5 per cent of the Welsh population are without a job.

Two thirds of those unemployed are 6.3 of Welsh males, while only 2.7 per cent of women face unemployment.

Traffic along one of the city's busiest stretches as become "dangerous" says Communities First's Joe Redmond.

Traffic travelling on Newport Road is causing chaos in Cardiff, with both the number of accidents and increased air pollution in Adamsdown proving cause for concern.  

Cardiff councillors have been told the amount of pollution surrounding the Cardiff Royal Infirmary (CRI) is increasing and the vast amount of traffic, which passes through this area of the city, is being blamed.

Employment rates in Wales are up and look set to rise further as two American companies announced they are bringing 650 new jobs to Cardiff as reported on The Cardiffian earlier today.

The latest report on the Welsh labour market, produced by the Office for National Statistics, estimates employment rates are up for the third month in a row. The employment rate for those aged between 16 and 64 in Wales is now 68.5 per cent, while the UK average for this group is 70.3 per cent.

Welsh Language Board find surprising results

A new report from the Welsh Language Board has found the number of Welsh speakers is declining, but in Cardiff Welsh speakers may be on the increase.

The report titled A Statistical overview of the Welsh Language was complied by Hywel Jones, who works for the Welsh Language Board.

“Cardiff is one of those areas where the numbers and percentages of Welsh speakers are probably still growing,” he said.

Cardiff's club live by the motto "Go hard or go to hospital", and this certainly comes out in their female squads.

Aberavon edge out Cardiff and all the other quarter-final ties

Cardiff RFC produced a late rally but it was not enough to prevent them losing 19-17 to Aberavon in the SWALEC cup quarter-finals.

Visitors Aberavon took the lead when flanker Aaron Bray's interception allowed wing Chris Lewis to touch down under the posts.

With the usually reliable fly-halves, Scott Sneddon for Cardiff and Matt Jarvis for Aberavon, both missing kicks, the Wizards led 5-0 at the interval.

Jarvis extended the lead after the break with a penalty which Sneddon replied to.

Cardiff Bay looks set to lose the WOW on the Waterfront festival this year because of council budget cuts.

The decision to cut the two-day festival, usually held each summer, will be made later today (Friday) after the Welsh Assembly has finalised budget decisions.

Councillor Nigel Howells said: “There’s no money in the council budget. Everything will have to come from the Assembly Government, dependent on the settlement, and if we don't get the funding then we will need to cancel one of this year's festivals.

Cardiff are enjoying some good form in their first season in top flight Welsh basketball, after winning promotion to the South Wales Valleys Basketball Division One last year, but face dangerous opposition in Swansea.

Capitals' First Team Coach, Chris Smith, said: "It is a tough match. They have got three current Welsh internationals: Matt Daw, Gareth Priddle and Joe Womack.

Team Hope Wales ran twice the length of the country for charity

A team of eight charity runners were welcomed back to Cardiff by military fanfare after completing their 420-mile relay race on Sunday.


Team Hope Wales finished their non-stop run from Cardiff Bay to Anglesey and back again in perfect weather with no accidents.


They and their six supporting crew were played in by a band from 3rd Royal Welsh and its regimental mascot Shenkin the goat.


Chris Jones, the 43-year-old businessman from Cardiff who organised the run, is a former officer in the regiment.

Just six arrests during this weekend's Cardiff - Swansea derby continues a positive trend for the fixture.

South Wales Police made only six arrests during this weekend's Cardiff vs Swansea derby, continuing a positive trend for the fixture.

There was still violence as fans in the eastern section of the Liberty Stadium had to be held back by officers, and a projectile was reportedly launched from the away end.

After Cardiff's 1-0 victory, some fans tried to cross the barriers separating the sets of supporters but were held back by police.

People travelling to Cardiff face huge delays after vandals allegedly stole a signalling cable on the line between Severn Tunnel Junction and Newport.
Trains were delayed and replacement bus services ran from Bristol to South Wales after an act of vandalism this weekend.
At around 8pm on Sunday evening, passengers on board the First Great Western Service from London to Swansea were forced to leave the train at Swindon.
