The death of a 22-stone sheep was remembered today in a tree planting ceremony

ONE OF Rhiwbina’s most famous residents, Nick Boing was remembered today at a memorial tree planting ceremony in the village’s Park y Pentre. But Nick was no ordinary resident as he was in fact a sheep.

Despite a whipping wind and driving rain, more than 40 residents turned out to remember Nick. 

Resident Mary Clarke, from Pen y Dre, said: “Whatever was going on in this village, Nick came. It really is very important for this village.

Libraries across Cardiff to reduce opening hours by shutting for one day a week

LIBRARIES in Cardiff will reduce their opening hours by one day a week next month.

The changes will affect 12 out of Cardiff’s 16 full-time libraries and will come into effect on April 1. Nearby libraries will close on different day, with none of the branch libraries closed on Saturdays.

More than 500 people have signed a petition against the proposed closure in Rhiwbina.

Results from a new survey have revealed 88 per cent of Wales now accept the world’s climate is changing. Although we are known for our rain not even the most fool-hardy of us could deny that our weather is changing. Last summer’s washout continued into winter, plunging the Welsh capital into transport chaos as red alert snow statuses turned into flood warnings. A nationwide announcement from the Environment Agency warns the floods and droughts of the last year are here to stay.

Ward residents suffer from lack of holes in the wall

Calls have been made to reintroduce a cash machine in Rhiwbina as the area’s elderly residents and finances suffer.

Up until January 2010 the area was served by a cash machine outside an HSBC bank in the village’s centre but when the branch closed, despite protesting from residents, the nearest outlet became one at the Morrisons supermarket store a mile away.

And with 13.73 per cent of Rhiwbina’s residents 75-years-old and over, the highest in Cardiff, the elderly struggle t0 get to far away machines.

But police state the number of officers on beat will not be affected after the local community rallied in defence of their station at a meeting last night.

Police have moved to reassure residents vital community officers will not be taken off their beat should Llanishen police station close in the future.

At a meeting last night at Rhiwbina Baptist Church, police met with residents to discuss plans to redirect Llanishen’s service to a new site in the Maelfa shopping area in Llanedeyrn (see pic). And although South Wales Police Inspector Paul Crowley was keen to stress the plans were not confirmed at this stage, he did accept it was a possibility in the coming years given recent budgetary cuts.

A meeting will be held tonight in Rhiwbina to discuss plans to close a raft of police stations across cardiff including Llanishen.

Campaigners have stepped up their efforts to save a Cardiff police station from closure.

Llanishen Police Station is under threat of being shut down as part of a city-wide move to cut the number of stations.

Under the plans, the Station Road police station at the heart of Llanishen village will be relocated four miles away to the redeveloped Maelfa shopping centre in Llanedeyrn.

Other stations including Canton have been put on the market in recent weeks while Whitchurch police station is set for closure on March 12.

Libraries all across Cardiff are owed almost £55,000 in fines yet to be collected.

Libraries across Cardiff are owed more than £50,000 in unpaid book fines.

The 19 Cardiff libraries are owed a combined total of £55,643.76 in late book return fines for the last year.

Cardiff Central Library is owed the highest amount with a total of  £29,859.63 outstanding in library charges.

WALES' Environment Agency has confirmed their findings from samples taken from a polluted stream in a Cardiff suburb last month.

WALES'S Environment Agency has confirmed a polluted stream in a Cardiff suburb is safe after analysing samples taken from it last month.

The environment agency told The Cardiffian, Reservoir Maintenance Services Ltd, of Vale View, Barry, was responsible for the pollution of Whitchurch Brook in Rhiwbina. The agency has issued a written warning to the company.

On February 22 the Environment Agency received 12 calls from concerned Rhiwbina residents about Whitchurch Brook running white.

Jesus appears to residents in Rhiwbina.

A Banksy-esque Jesus has appeared in a Cardiff suburb as part of a church's preparation for Easter.

A modern-day image of Jesus has been painted on to the outside wall of Canolfan Beulah Community Centre in Rhiwbina.

The typical depiction of Jesus as a bearded man with out-stretched arms exists, but with a couple of subversions: a t-shirt and jeans.

Victor Pearce, 66, has been the site manager at Llanishen Fach Primary School, Rhiwbina, for the past 19 years and will be retiring at the end of March as he feels his diabetes will prevent him from giving the job the commitment it needs.

Wales’s Environment Agency received 12 calls from concerned Cardiff residents yesterday regarding a suburb stream running white.

Rhiwbina residents noticed the discolouration of the stream and reported it.

Officers from Environment Agency Wales took samples from Whitchurch Brook and investigations traced the discolouration back to two nearby underground drinking water reservoirs.

The agency has today announced that it would like to reassure residents in Rhiwbina that there is nothing to be alarmed about.

A special tree planting ceremony took place in a Cardiff suburb yesterday.

Five Mountain Ash trees were planted in Parc y Pentre, Rhiwbina, to replace those which were destroyed by vandals in October last year.

A further two were also planted to replace those which were badly damaged or had simply died.

Cardiff Council Parks department planted the trees that had been funded by Rhiwbina residents.

Residents raised the money after the Council said they could not afford to replace them.

We were amazed by the large number of people who attended our public meeting in Rhiwbina on Tuesday February 8 to discuss the Rhiwbina Candidate Sites which have been put forward by developers for inclusion in the Local Development Plan. The approximate headcount was 250.

A public meeting was held in Rhiwbina to discuss the proposed alternative sites for the Local Development Plan.

Cardiff residents voiced their concerns about the proposed alternative sites included in the Local Development Plan (LDP) at a public meeting held in Rhiwbina on Tuesday evening.

A total of 112 sites have been submitted for the whole of Cardiff. Rhiwbina has five candidate sites.

The meeting was arranged by the ward’s independent councillors and was chaired by independent leader Jayne Cowan.

“This meeting is an opportunity for residents to have their voice heard,” she said.
