Jones and Warburton given the chance to impress in crunch-game at Murrayfield

ALUN Wyn Jones and Sam Warburton have been included in the starting line-up for Wales’s game against Scotland on Saturday, but Ryan Jones retains the captaincy.

The Dragons narrowly beat the Blues in the south east Wales derby, after a game full of silly mistakes and wasted opportunities.

Newport Dragons 18-14 Cardiff Blues

The Dragons narrowly beat the Blues in the south east Wales derby, after a game full of silly mistakes and wasted opportunities.

Overall it was a poor performance by both teams, which came down to a slogging match between the kickers.

The game was a sloppy affair with neither side able to take control of the run of play. Both teams made recurrent mistakes throughout the match, with one mishandling being cancelled out by a careless knock on.

Rob Howley  gives his verdict ahead of tomorrow's 6 Nations clash.

Rob Howley believes Wales will have added motivation to beat France tomorrow, so they can honour the memory of Mervyn Davies who died today.

The Wales attack coach said the players were saddened to hear of his death this morning just before training.  But Howley says it will give the team an extra determination to win tomorrow.

Welsh skills coach Neil Jenkins has heralded Cardiff Blues' Leigh Halfpenny as the player to make the difference against the French on Saturday

Welsh skills coach Neil Jenkins has praised the role of new full-time goal kicker Leigh Halfpenny ahead of Saturday's clash with France at the Millennium Stadium.

A win over Philippe Saint-André's  side would give Wales their third Grand Slam in eight years and be a fitting finale to what has been another brilliant campaign.

One of the stars of Warren Gatland's side has been full-back Halfpenny who has become the side's number one kicker.

Ticket touts seen advertising in city centre ahead of Grand Slam decider

The WRU has appealed to rugby fans not to use ticket touts after advertisements were spotted on empty shop windows in Cardiff city centre.

The ads were asking for tickets to sold-out Wales games against France at the Millennium Stadium this weekend and the victory over England at Twickenham last month.

The notices read: "Rugby Tickets Wanted" with cash offered in "strict confidence" and two phone numbers also provided.

Wales coach Warren Gatland has urged his team not to underestimate Italy on Saturday as Wales push to set up a Grand Slam show down with France.

Warren Gatland has promised his side will be “brimming with ruthless intent” as they welcome Italy to the Millennium Stadium tomorrow.

After securing the Triple Crown with a late 19-12 win over England at Twickenham, Wales are just two wins away from a third Grand Slam in eight years.

But before a potential Six Nations decider with the French, Gatland’s side must get over the tricky hurdle of the Italians.

The Scottish player is deemed to be tied to Wales after playing an under-20 Six Nations match last year.

The International Rugby Board (IRB) has dismissed a Scottish appeal over the eligibility of Steven Shingler.

Scotland had picked the utility back, who is primarily a centre for his club London Irish, in their preliminary squad for this season’s Six Nations championship in January.

But Shingler has already appeared for Wales’s under-20 side, and the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) argued this meant he could not represent the senior side of another nation.

Wales's coach is confident his young side can topple the Azzurri to set up a Grand Glam show down with France a week on Saturday.

Speaking ahead of Wales’s Six Nations clash against Italy, coach Warren Gatland warned his side not to underestimate opponents Italy.

"They’re a team in transition and that can take time, but they’re still very strong up front. The first 20 or 30 minutes will be a war of attrition," said Gatland.

Italy are set to make seven changes for their Six Nations tie against Wales on Saturday as Bergamasco and Burton return for the Azzurri.

Italy coach Jacques Brunel has made seven changes for the Azzurri’s clash against Wales with the relegation of Tobias Botes to the bench in favour of Kris Burton.

Saturday’s fixture also sees the return of Mirco Bergamasco to the left wing to reach his 86th cap with Luke McLean moving to the right. Bergamasco will not however take over kicking duties as he has done in the past with Burton taking up the responsibility.

Sam Warburton has been ruled out of Wales’s penultimate match in the Six Nations against Italy with a knee problem.

Having already secured the Triple Crown, Wales's attentions will now be focused on securing the Grand Slam. Huw Silk looks back at the previous Welsh sides able to complete an unlikely white-wash.

When video referee Iain Ramage uttered the word "inconclusive" just after 5.30pm on Saturday evening Wales's 20th Triple Crown was sealed and, crucially, the illusive Grand Slam title came one step closer.

England winger David Strettle’s score was disallowed, giving Sam Warburton the first piece of silverware of his short international captaincy. Thrilling wins over Ireland in Dublin, Scotland in Cardiff and the biggest scalp of all, the 19-12 triumph over England at Twickenham, have set Wales up for their third slam in eight years.

February 24, 2012

Huw Silk takes an alternative view at tomorrow's Six Nations clash.

BBC pundit Jonathan Davies, who inspired Wales to their last-but-one win at Twickenham, has already predicted his nation will “absolutely smash” England. Colleague Brian Moore agrees, declaring Sam Warburton’s men to be “clear favourites”.

As the teams head for Twickenham and the third round of this season’s Six Nations’ Championship, pundits and fans alike have been furiously poring over form and news of injuries in a bid to call how the game will go.

A preview of tonight's match between Cardiff Blues and Connacht in a one off fixture at the Cardiff Arms Park.

Cardiff Blues make seven changes for this evening’s RaboDirect Pro12 clash with Connacht, their first home game at the Arms Park since May 2009.

The one-off return to the city-centre ground, which was announced earlier this week, has raised anticipation for the game and the club expects a bumper crowd, having sold 6,000 tickets by last night.

Paul Tito’s men will see this as the perfect opportunity to get their league campaign back on track.

Ill discipline must be curbed says coach

Welsh Coach Warren Gatland has warned his players against any further ill discipline as he prepares his side to take on Scotland in the Six Nations.

Bradley Davies’s sin binning against Ireland last week was just one of a number of yellow cards which have hindered Wales in recent times and Gatland has had enough.

The New Zealander has admitted his warnings have had no effect on the squad and has threatened his players with financial penalties if it happens again.
