A memory cafe has been set up by the Alzheimer’s Society for people from ethnic minorities in Cardiff suffering from dementia.

THE MEMORY cafe in the Butetown History and Arts Centre aims to provide a safe and relaxed environment where people who are affected by dementia can socialise and share their experiences.

The cafe has been set up in conjunction with Diverse Cymru and focuses on the area’s ethnic minority communities who lack awareness about dementia and dementia support.

Police confirm body found in River Ely two days ago is missing rugby fan.

THE BODY found in the River Ely two days ago has now formally been identified as the missing rugby fan Ben Thompson.

South Wales Police said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and his family has been informed.

Ben’s wife Jo has spoken of her relief at coming to the end of what has been an emotional ordeal for the family.
She said: “Losing Ben has left us all devastated but finding him on Tuesday has answered many unanswered questions and given us the chance to say our goodbyes.

Cardiff council have committed to closing the pay gap between men and women by April

CARDIFF Council pledged to close the pay gap between its male and female employees, although some argue not enough has been done.

Council statistics, revealed in a report put to cabinet last night, show female employees of Cardiff Council earned on average £1.05 less than men in 2011/2012. On a 35-hour week, this is a difference of £36.75, which is almost £2,000 per year.

Plans to hide cameras on staff at the alcohol treatment centre have been met with privacy concerns

PLANS to shock Cardiff binge-drinkers by filming them in the Alcohol Treatment Centre have been met with concern.

The Welsh Government refused permission for hidden cameras to tape drunken revellers at an alcohol treatment centre in Ebenezer Church in the city centre when it opened last year to relieve pressure on local hospitals.

But ministers have now given staff the green light to wear matchbox-sized cameras to record drunk people in the centre from next weekend.

More on the IPCC investigation into South Wales Police's handling of domestic violence cases.

THE INDEPENDENT Police Complaints Commission has revealed police officers from Cardiff are among those under investigation for malpractice in the handling of domestic violence cases.

A Cardiff woman made a complaint at Fairwater Police Station in 2011 after her partner threatened her, but she was sent home by officers without any action being taken. She was assaulted by her partner two days later.

The prefered bidder for building the incinerator claims complaints about the project are coming from a "loud minority".

THE CONSTRUCTION of an incinerator has caused upset among Splott residents, but officials deny there have been complaints.

Last week Viridor was named as the preferred bidder for the building of the incinerator by Prosiect Gwyrrd and its five local authorities. The search for the construction site of the incinerator started in 2009.

Many Splott residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the preferred bidder being named in the area, and feel they have not had adequate consultation.

Women take to the streets in Cardiff with a night walk against domestic violence


IN AN age where gender equality is written into the law books, the very idea of holding an annual International Women's Day, on March 8, should seem absurd.
In the UK, the gap between what men and women get paid is reducing but the difference still stands at around 10 per cent. Some professions such as brokers, doctors and lawyers have a much higher pay difference.

Elinor Barker wins her first gold medal in the women's cycling team pursuit with Olympic champians, Laura Trott and Dani King, in Minsk

 

CARDIFF teenager, Elinor Barker, won her first senior gold medal after beating Australia in the women’s team pursuit at the World Track Championships in Minsk yesterday. 

Barker, 18, took time off school to step in for London 2012 winner, Joanna Rowsell, who missed the championships to concentrate on her road cycling.

Barker joined Laura Trott and Dani King to defend Britain world title in emphatic style, clocking a time of three minutes 18.140 seconds to beat finalists Australia by 1.773 seconds.

Public opinion may be turning against The Sun's News In Briefs.

Over the past week debate around The Sun's Page 3 has resurfaced with a vengeance. It began with a momentous tweet from Rupert Murdoch responding to an accusation that Page 3 was out-dated with: “You maybe right, don't know but considering.” Jenny Willott, MP for Cardiff Central, has added her voice by signing the No More Page 3 campaign’s petition and has frequently highlighted her concern to Ministers over the pressures around body image.

The AFC Butetown pitch is consistently littered with used needles

A FOOTBALL coach in Cardiff has described the “continual fight” against used needles which are discarded around their pitch every week.

Christian Wagstaff, 40, said he has to arrive early every week to clear the area around the pitch in parkland behind Loudoun Square, where AFC Butetown play their matches.

The team recently had to have gates fitted on the dugouts because users would shelter underneath them when it was raining.

Prime Minister says people should not need to use foodbanks, while Cardiff foodbanks see increase in customers

Prime Minister David Cameron told Westminster last week the poor, including those in Cardiff, should not need food banks to help them eat.

He said: “Benefit levels are not set at such a low level that people can’t eat, I’m afraid.”

This came as food banks across the country reported unprecedented demand. There is a hidden hunger in our society, and in the Welsh capital Cardiff Food bank are doing their best to tackle it.

An insight into the dental scene in Cardiff, with a map on NHS dentists still taking on patients in the area

PEOPLE in Cardiff cannot find dental care due to the lack of NHS dentists and the cost of private ones.

The Cardiffian contacted every dentist listed with the Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan Health Board between St Mellons and Penarth. We found less than 20 per cent of dentists were taking on NHS patients, while 64 per cent were taking on private patients.

Pontcanna Riding School is due to be taken over by a Cardiff equestrian centre, after Cardiff Council's cuts in funding mean they can no longer run it.

A CARDIFF equestrian centre is planning to save Pontcanna Riding School after the council announced it would have to be sold to an outside investor.

It comes after Cardiff Council insisted yesterday it does not intend to close Pontcanna’s riding stables despite staff members and clients being told otherwise earlier this week. The Cardiffian understands there are a number of potential investors now interested in the site.

Teachers in Wales are being subjected to physical violence and verbal abuse on a daily basis, a survey by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers has revealed.

A third of the school and college staff surveyed claim to have endured punching, kicking and pushing while at work, 25 per cent of whom say they were targeted personally. Another quarter said they had witnessed violence directed at a colleague.

New £770,000 grant from Welsh Government aims to help poorer pupils with school uniforms

Teachers' unions in Wales are united in their support of the Welsh Government’s announcement of a continuation of the uniform grant scheme.

The scheme was introduced in 2007-8 and low-income families were entitled to £97.50 for school uniforms for the school year. As of 2012/13 these families can claim up to £105 for uniforms.

Questions are raised over access to NHS dentists in Cardiff

Only 10 per cent of dental surgeries in Cardiff are currently accepting new NHS patients, with waiting lists in some areas running at more than two months.

This comes after a report by the Welsh Liberal Democrats revealed only 37 per cent of dentists across Wales were accepting new patients, with waiting lists on the increase across the country.
