Celtic Dragons head to Loughborough hoping to boost their top four chances.

CELTIC Dragons head coach Melissa Hyndman says her team must not underestimate winless Loughborough Lightning ahead of tomorrow’s Fiat Netball Superleague clash.

The Cardiff-based team travel to Loughborough on the back of a 66-57 win against the Yorkshire Jets in Leeds last week, leapfrogging their opponents into fifth in the table.

The Dragons will be hoping for their third win this season with victory in Loughborough, and to jump into the Superleague’s top four in the process.

Cardiff City face their old boss Dave Jones when they travel to Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow.

FORMER Cardiff City manager Dave Jones hopes to dent Cardiff’s promotion push when they travel to Hillsborough tomorrow.

Jones led the Bluebirds to the Championship promotion play-off final in 2010 and the semi-finals in 2011, before leaving the club in acrimonious circumstances. 

Jones said: “I left Cardiff and am now manager at another club - they don’t mean anything to me.”

Robin McBryde says the rugby-hype of Cardiff can make all the difference in Wales's quest to pip England to Six Nations glory tomorrow

WALES forwards coach Robin McBryde has predicted “mayhem” in Cardiff if Wales can pip arch-rivals England to the Six Nations title.

Wales go into the final game of this season’s tournament second in the table, needing a win by eight points or more to retain the Championship. McBryde knows beating England to Championship glory would spark scenes of wild celebrations across the Welsh capital.

MrBryde admitted playing England intensifies the excitement before the game.

Netball team must beat Yorkshire Jets to keep top tier hopes alive

CELTIC Dragons face the Yorkshire Jets tonight in a crucial game in the Netball Superleague.

The Dragons must win if they are to keep their hopes alive of entering the top tier after the “Super Split” on March 23.

In their last outing, the Dragons suffered a heavy defeat to title holders Manchester Thunder, losing 39-62, and will be looking to make amends tonight.

Co-captain Sara Hale said: "We need to win and we expect to win. We need to rectify the things that let us down in the Manchester Thunder game, and take away the positives.

Australian "found it hard" being in charge of Wales

TWO FORMER Welsh internationals have questioned Scott Johnson’s
credentials as head coach ahead of the Six Nations clash between Wales
and Scotland tomorrow.

Johnson, who is currently head coach of Scotland’s national side, “found it hard” being in charge of Wales according to Deiniol Jones, who is now the match-day team manager at the Cardiff Blues.

SPORT Wales chair Professor Laura McAllister said women and girl participation is “stubbornly low” in Wales, in a presentation at the Senedd this morning.

In a question and answer session to mark International Women’s Day former Welsh football international Professor McAllister stressed the importance of sport across all sectors of public life.

Paralympian and Cardiff Huskies player, Steve Thomas, returns to GB ice sledge hockey team

 

Yesterday marked a year until the beginning of the Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia.

To date, Great Britain has never won a gold medal at the Winter Games and at the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver the GB team came home empty-handed.

For GB’s sledge hockey team a place at the Games would be an achievement in itself.

Their preparations have been boosted by the return of Cardiff Huskies veteran, Steve Thomas.

INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day has celebrated the achievements of women since 1911 and the build-up in Cardiff this year is more popular than ever.
The Welsh Government fund events in celebration of the day through the Women’s Equality Network Wales (WENWales) who have created a theme for 2013: Visible Women: Empowering girls and women in Wales.

Fans say they want to set up their own club

Fans group, FC Bluebirds of Cardiff, have announced their intention to set up their own club after Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan’s decision to change the clubs traditional colours from blue to red and amend the club’s badge to include a dragon in the summer.
FC Bluebirds of Cardiff founder, Darren Thomas, said for many Cardiff fans the tipping point was the Brighton match two weeks ago which saw the club give out free red scarves to fans. Thomas said: “Scarf-gate two weeks ago was the point that people have been pushed over the edge.

The Cardiff ice hockey team must beat the Blaze to secure their place in the top four

 

TWO DAMAGING defeats against the Belfast Giant and the Coventry Blaze have jeopardised the Cardiff Devils' play-off hopes.

For most of the season the Welsh side have looked on course to finish in the Elite League top four, but they now face a battle with the Blaze to secure fourth spot. The Devils were hammered 5-0 away at Belfast on Saturday, before losing Sunday’s crunch match against the Coventry Blaze 3-2.

Match preview: Cardiff City v Derby County

Malky Mackay insists he is not worried about Cardiff City’s recent defeats ahead of tonight’s home game against Derby County.
The Championship leaders saw their lead cut to five points by Hull City on the weekend after the Bluebirds lost for the second time in three games. Saturday’s defeat at Middlesbrough and a home loss to Brighton two weeks ago have halted Cardiff’s charge towards the Premier League, something they have narrowly missed out on in the past three seasons.

The reshuffle means two of Wales’s most promising performers in this season’s Six Nations, Andrew Coombs and Justin Tipuric, drop to the bench for the game at Murrayfield. Paul James replaces the injured Gethin Jenkins in the front row in the only other change to the team.

Since Tom's death last year, The Tom Maynard Trust has proved a great success and a host of sponsored events are planned for 2013. 

ON TUESDAY, an inquest into the death of Cardiff cricketer Tom Maynard will be held at Westminster Coroner’s Court.

The former Glamorgan batsman was hit by a London Underground train in Wimbledon last Summer following a T20 game for Surrey against Kent.

Since his death, the Tom Maynard Trust was established to help the development of aspiring disadvantaged cricketers and the support of other sportspeople. The Trust provides bursaries, help with training and education, assistance with kit and equipment and financial support for overseas placements.

The AFC Butetown pitch is consistently littered with used needles

A FOOTBALL coach in Cardiff has described the “continual fight” against used needles which are discarded around their pitch every week.

Christian Wagstaff, 40, said he has to arrive early every week to clear the area around the pitch in parkland behind Loudoun Square, where AFC Butetown play their matches.

The team recently had to have gates fitted on the dugouts because users would shelter underneath them when it was raining.

WITH the recent announcement of a new wakeboarding facility in Cardiff, water sports have been causing quite a splash of late.

The Cardiff International White Water (CIWW) at the International Sports Village in Cardiff Bay offers a wide range of activities, from thrilling white water rafting to calmer runs for flat-water paddlers.

The centre is not just for experts and offers a wide variety of courses which promote wider local participation.

Despite cut-backs and closures of sporting facilities, Cardiff is making its case to a host the third-largest sporting event in the world.

IT IS 55 years since the world watched athletes march onto the field at Cardiff Arms Park for the opening ceremony of an event which Cardiff Council is hoping to recreate.

The sixth Empire Games, now the Commonwealth Games, were hosted in Cardiff in 1958. Over 1,000 athletes competed from 35 nations, in 94 events. Today, more than 5,000 competitors take part from 72 different countries and Cardiff Council is planning a bid for the 2026 Games.

The bid has raised questions over the potentially damaging costs of holding the world's third largest sporting event.

The Welsh Snooker Open tournament will continue until Sunday, with Cardiff clubs hoping a Welsh player can win to revive interest in the sport.

The Welsh Open snooker championship at the Newport centre began yesterday amid calls for renewed interest in the sport.

The tournament is a world rankings event which attracts the leading stars from around the globe.

John Dobson, a national coach in Wales, hopes a Welsh winner at the tournament could help revive interest in a sport that has dipped in popularity in recent years.

Mr Dobson said: “There are a lot of snooker clubs closing these days.
