Devils hopeful for future despite missing out on play-offs for the first time in ten years. 

 

THE Cardiff Devils annual end of year awards at the Coal Exchange last night was an evening for celebration, but the atmosphere was subdued after missing out on the play-offs.

Highlights of the tour include a maiden century for Will Bragg. 

GLAMORGAN are in good shape ahead of the new season following a successful pre-season tour to South Africa, according to first XI scorer Dr Andrew Hignell.

The 17-man team fly back home this evening following ten days in Potchefstroom, outside of Johannesburg, which was the location of their 2011 pre-season tour and a training venue for many international teams.

This year, the tour involved fitness and pre-season conditioning work and two warm-up matches against a Leeds-Bradford MCCU side and a North West Invitation XI.

TODAY marks the 25th anniversary of Red Nose Day, a campaign which has raised more than £600m to help alleviate poverty in the UK and Africa.

The idea behind Comic Relief and Red Nose Day is simply to make the public laugh while they raise money to help people in desperate need.

Cardiff City face their old boss Dave Jones when they travel to Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow.

FORMER Cardiff City manager Dave Jones hopes to dent Cardiff’s promotion push when they travel to Hillsborough tomorrow.

Jones led the Bluebirds to the Championship promotion play-off final in 2010 and the semi-finals in 2011, before leaving the club in acrimonious circumstances. 

Jones said: “I left Cardiff and am now manager at another club - they don’t mean anything to me.”

THE BLUES have added another mountainous physical specimen to their forward pack for next season.
Filo Paulo, 24, will slot into the front five alongside new boys Matthew Rees and returning star Gethin Jenkins. Paulo is no shrinking violet, standing 6”6 tall and tipping the scales at 19-stone.

Fans say they want to set up their own club

Fans group, FC Bluebirds of Cardiff, have announced their intention to set up their own club after Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan’s decision to change the clubs traditional colours from blue to red and amend the club’s badge to include a dragon in the summer.
FC Bluebirds of Cardiff founder, Darren Thomas, said for many Cardiff fans the tipping point was the Brighton match two weeks ago which saw the club give out free red scarves to fans. Thomas said: “Scarf-gate two weeks ago was the point that people have been pushed over the edge.

Match preview: Cardiff City v Derby County

Malky Mackay insists he is not worried about Cardiff City’s recent defeats ahead of tonight’s home game against Derby County.
The Championship leaders saw their lead cut to five points by Hull City on the weekend after the Bluebirds lost for the second time in three games. Saturday’s defeat at Middlesbrough and a home loss to Brighton two weeks ago have halted Cardiff’s charge towards the Premier League, something they have narrowly missed out on in the past three seasons.

The Council hopes  the Olympic legacy will continue with the bid for the Games.

CARDIFF council has announced it plans to pursue its bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games which they hope will continue the city’s Olympic legacy.

The council’s pledge comes in the latest draft corporate plans for Cardiff, with the report promising to “develop a bid to host the Commonwealth Games that in itself delivers immediate and lasting benefits".

In order to host the world’s third largest multi-sport event, Cardiff would need to accommodate more than 6,000 athletes from 71 Nations in 17 different sports.

Cardiff City's promotion hopes lie in the balance after they throw away lead in the 94th minute at Cardiff City Stadium 

Cardiff City let another lead slip as Oliver Norwood’s 94thminute strike earned Coventry a point at Cardiff City Stadium and further dented the Bluebird’s promotion hopes.

Cardiff had gone ahead through a Cody McDonald own goal but Jordan Clarke deservedly levelled things up after half-time.  Peter Whittingham looked to have secured all three points but when the Cardiff defence failed to close down Norwood on the edge of the box, the midfielder made no mistake, firing low past David Marshall to earn his side a draw.

Rees will leave at the end of the season, making him the sixth senior player to depart

 

Richie Rees will leave the Cardiff Blues at the end of the season, the region have confirmed.

Rees, 28, is the latest in a string of players to announce they are leaving Wales at the end of the season to ply their trade elsewhere.  His decision to leave the club makes him the sixth senior player to announce he is to leave the club, following announcements already made by Gethin Jenkins, Rhys Thomas, Dan Parks and Casey Laulala and the expected retirement of Martyn Williams.

Cardiff Devils swept aside the Edinburgh Capitals 10-4 at the Cardiff Ice Arena last night to secure fourth spot in the Elite League.

Gerard Adams, Scott Dobben and Jamie Vanderveeken got things underway for Cardiff with scores in the first period, but it was in the second 20 when Cardiff really cut loose with seven goals in a devastating spell.

The Dragons narrowly beat the Blues in the south east Wales derby, after a game full of silly mistakes and wasted opportunities.

Overall it was a poor performance by both teams, which came down to a slogging match between the kickers.

The game was a sloppy affair with neither side able to take control of the run of play. Both teams made recurrent mistakes throughout the match, with one mishandling being cancelled out by a careless knock on.

An overtime goal by captain Stuart MacRae earned Cardiff Devils a hard-fought victory over Coventry Blaze

Cardiff Devils sealed a fine overtime win over Coventry Blaze last night with a captain’s goal from leading scorer Stuart MacRae.

The Canadian rifled Phil Hill’s layoff into the top corner for 3-2 to send Devils fans wild after an engrossing contest in which they were behind for a long spell.

Kenton Smith had put the Devils 1-0 up at 6.15 in the first period with an assist from Scott Matzka, but Blaze hit back through Kralj Matic before going 2-1 ahead at 7.34 in the second period.

The Blues will be looking to make it two from two this season as they return to their old stomping ground

Tonight's game against Ulster will see Martyn Williams start for Cardiff Blues for the second time  since recovering from a broken arm which left him on the sidelines for almost five months. 

Williams will start at openside tonight as a late replacement for Josh Navidi, who pulled out with a bruised hip. The Blues will also see international trio Lloyd Williams, Scott Andrews and Gavin Henson return from Six Nations duty.

A preview of tonight's match between Cardiff Blues and Connacht in a one off fixture at the Cardiff Arms Park.

Cardiff Blues make seven changes for this evening’s RaboDirect Pro12 clash with Connacht, their first home game at the Arms Park since May 2009.

The one-off return to the city-centre ground, which was announced earlier this week, has raised anticipation for the game and the club expects a bumper crowd, having sold 6,000 tickets by last night.

Paul Tito’s men will see this as the perfect opportunity to get their league campaign back on track.

Friday night's RaboDirect PRO12 clash with Connacht will be moved from Cardiff City Stadium

Cardiff Blues are set to return to their traditional home at Cardiff’s Arms Park this Friday for their Pro12 game against Connacht.

It will be the first game played at the ground, which adjoins the Millennium Stadium in the city centre, since the Blues moved to Cardiff City Stadium in 2009.

Fans have been reluctant to embrace the new location and in turn attendances have been poor.

Dave Jones has said every game is a must-win occasion as only eight games remain of the season, with the play-off candidates all pushing for those top two direct promotion spots.


The Bluebirds are four points behind second place Norwich City, but could leapfrog arch-rivals Swansea City who are one point ahead in third if they collect the three points tomorrow.

The Cardiff Devils will face the Belfast Giants in the semi-finals of the Elite League play-offs after a convincing win against the Hull Stingrays on Sunday.

The Devils still had much to do going into their home leg of the play-off against the Hull Stingrays after a narrow 2-1 victory on Humberside on Saturday.

But on Sunday the home side did not fail to convert the win, cruising to an impressive 6-1 lead before easing up in the third quarter to hold out at 6-3.
