“Concrete cancer” has led to a £400,000 project to replace concrete lampposts around Cardiff City to metal ones.

Many of the lighting columns in the city are concrete, and due to environmental facts they are deteriorating and posing a danger to pedestrians. Cardiff council have proposed a scheme to prevent this, which has began with several columns around the civic centre.

Down's syndrome Awareness Week highlights Cardiff University's extensive visual research

A TEAM at Cardiff University has spearheaded research into visual acuity as the condition is highlighted for Down’s Syndrome Awareness Week this week.


Dr Maggie Woodhouse and her research team at the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences have studied visual development among a group of more than 250 children and young people with Down’s syndrome for more than 20 years.


Their work has formed the basis for key recommendations around Down’s Syndrome Awareness Week, which runs from March 18-24.

DISCUSSIONS over a deal to provide heat to Cardiff businesses from the Splott incinerator have been branded a “PR stunt”.

The proposed £30 million deal between Virodor waste management and E.On energy suppliers is the latest development in the building of a new incinerator off Ocean Way which has faced opposition from local residents from its inception.

Libraries across Cardiff to reduce opening hours by shutting for one day a week

LIBRARIES in Cardiff will reduce their opening hours by one day a week next month.

The changes will affect 12 out of Cardiff’s 16 full-time libraries and will come into effect on April 1. Nearby libraries will close on different day, with none of the branch libraries closed on Saturdays.

More than 500 people have signed a petition against the proposed closure in Rhiwbina.

Around sixty children from St Francis RC Primary School are writing to the Pope to congratulate him  and ask him to visit the school which shares his name.

A CARDIFF Catholic School is planning to write to the new Pope to invite him to the school which shares his name.

About 60 children at St. Francis Roman Catholic Primary School will be writing letters to Pope Francis over the week before easter to congratulate him on becoming leader of the catholic church, and invite him as a guest to the school.

The prefered bidder for building the incinerator claims complaints about the project are coming from a "loud minority".

THE CONSTRUCTION of an incinerator has caused upset among Splott residents, but officials deny there have been complaints.

Last week Viridor was named as the preferred bidder for the building of the incinerator by Prosiect Gwyrrd and its five local authorities. The search for the construction site of the incinerator started in 2009.

Many Splott residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the preferred bidder being named in the area, and feel they have not had adequate consultation.

Employees get pay rise despite shop closures across Cardiff

EMPLOYEES from John Lewis and Waitrose in Cardiff have reason to celebrate after being awarded a bonus equivalent to almost nine weeks pay.
From 2012 until now, Cardiff has seen the closure of Peacocks and BHS, Thomas Cook and Barratts going into administration and hundreds of job losses. But the John Lewis Partnership has appeared to ignore the struggles of the high street and gathered profit increases across all outlets. As a result of this fourth consecutive gain, 84,700 partners will receive a bonus of 17 per cent.

Business owners say plans to develop Enfys cycle route do not go far enough


COUNCIL plans to develop the Enfys cycle network between Ely and Cardiff city centre have been accused of just “ticking boxes” by local business owners.
Public consultations began this week on the Route 6 proposals to resurface parts of Cowbridge Road East.
While many cyclists have welcomed the plans, businesses on the busy high street have criticised them as unnecessary and ineffective.

Setting off lanterns could be banned in a report by Cardiff Council

CARDIFF Council have put forward a report banning the release of balloons and lanterns.

The Environmental Scrutiny Committee recently wrote a report called “Litter in Cardiff” which looked at a range of litter issues throughout the city. The report included a proposal for a balloon and lantern release policy.

The members on the Scrutiny Committee recommended the council should prevent the release of balloons and lanterns from council-owned land. A number of high-street shops, including Poundland and The Works, have sold the popular novelty item.

Sexism still undermining women despite the celebration International Womens' Day

International Women’s Day marks the celebration of women all over the world and their independent but despite the massive developments which have taken place to make what was a man’s world equally a women’s, there is still one prevalent issue which undermines all the good work which has been done.
Sexism is something which is not seen as a problem to many but a comment dismissed as a joke or banter can seriously affect the image and respect directed towards women and sets a tone and a precedent of how women can be treated by men.

Cosmeston Medieval Village secures £14,000 funding

COSMESTON Medieval Village is set to be given a new lease of life
after organisational changes and a financial boost.
The troubled Penarth tourist attraction has come under threat in
recent years due to financial difficulties, but a new trust has been
set up to help run the village.
The village, which is a site of archeological significance, has
already secured funding from Vale of Glamorgan Council and a Rural
Development Grant worth £14,000 for the coming year.

Welsh Cavalry moving to Norfolk due to defence cuts


The Welsh cavalry will be moving to Norfolk after spending the last six years stationed abroad, following today’s announcement of the withdrawal of British troops from Germany.
Defence Secretary Philip Hammond announced cuts of 400 Army personnel from Wales as well as the withdrawal of the British Army from Germany by 2019.

Welsh language music is in a precarious position. The clashes between Welsh musicians and the BBC, along with last week’s announcement on Clwb Ifor Bach’s uncertain future, have left the industry stuck between a rock and a hard place.


On January 1, BBC Radio Cymru lost the right to play more than 30,000 Welsh language songs because of a dispute over royalty payments to musicians. Earlier this month, EOS, the group representing the musicians, came to an interim agreement with the radio station allowing them to resume business as normal.

Cardiff Foodbank has been guaranteed a minimum of £10,000 from Comic Relief after being entered into an online poll alongside other charities around the UK.

The Netmums website, which is holding the poll, chose the foodbank from a list of five Welsh charities selected by Comic Relief. All the charities in the poll are competing for £80,000.
