Work due to start yesterday on a new Emergency Unit at the University Hospital of Wales has been postponed due to increased demand on the service.

A LAST-MINUTE decision to postpone a £3.4 million investment on the Emergency Unit at University Hospital of Wales (UHW) has been made due to the service facing exceptional demand.
 
Emergency units across Wales are dealing with a record number of patients with UHW, for instance, seeing a 25 per cent increase since last year. As a result remodelling work, which was due to begin yesterday, has been shelved until May.

WE SEE dragons a lot in Cardiff. The beast proudly flown on the Welsh flag is a reminder of the country’s national pride and heritage. But another symbol, less easily spotted on St Mary Street, also means a lot to the city.

This weekend will be the exception: you can expect to see shamrocks everywhere when the city is wreathed in green for St Patrick’s Day on Sunday. But we haven’t just adopted the day as an excuse for a booze-up. Wales has historic links with Ireland, and its capital was built by Irish hands.

Cardiff Foodbank has been selected as the Welsh charity of choice by Comic Relief and Netmums to receive funding of up to £80,000 on Red Nose Day.

New research shows shopping in Cardiff proves more difficult for some.

Shopping may be considered a leisurely activity for most people in Cardiff but an event today revealed for some of the capital’s residents, it can be much more hard work.

The event was held at Cardiff city centre this morning in response to a petition from Mencap Cymru and Ysgol Erw’r Delyn concerning accessibility for disabled people.

The National Assembly’s Petitions committee met with Mencap Cymru and pupils from Ysgol Erw’r Delyn to walk through the city centre to highlight some of the day-to-day problems they face.

Employees get pay rise despite shop closures across Cardiff

EMPLOYEES from John Lewis and Waitrose in Cardiff have reason to celebrate after being awarded a bonus equivalent to almost nine weeks pay.
From 2012 until now, Cardiff has seen the closure of Peacocks and BHS, Thomas Cook and Barratts going into administration and hundreds of job losses. But the John Lewis Partnership has appeared to ignore the struggles of the high street and gathered profit increases across all outlets. As a result of this fourth consecutive gain, 84,700 partners will receive a bonus of 17 per cent.

Councillor Neil McEvoy and Councillor Huw Thomas row over cost of hosting Volvo Ocean Race

The recent announcement of Cardiff as a host port for the world’s premier round-the-world sailing race in 2017/18 has sparked a row between two Cardiff councillors.
The row began on Twitter on Wednesday evening as Plaid Cymru councillor Neil McEvoy tweeted his anger at the announcement saying “£1.5 million for a boat race. No money for vital services. Labour Cardiff Council. #redtories.” This comment sparked a heated debate between himself and Labour councillor Huw Thomas on the social networking site.

Welsh Cavalry moving to Norfolk due to defence cuts


The Welsh cavalry will be moving to Norfolk after spending the last six years stationed abroad, following today’s announcement of the withdrawal of British troops from Germany.
Defence Secretary Philip Hammond announced cuts of 400 Army personnel from Wales as well as the withdrawal of the British Army from Germany by 2019.

A couple of Cardiff groups have created a map plotting where food does and can grow in the city.

The allotment is the usual haunt of the green-fingered gardener, but two Cardiff-based community groups are about to change all that.

Farm Cardiff and Orchard Cardiff are leading the drive to get gardening-mad Cardiffians growing their own fruit and vegetables by mapping every potential area where food could, and does, grow. Their aim is to make Cardiff a more sustainable city by getting more food grown locally by communities.

Today, people all across the country will be donning their daffodills, but where did it all begin?

TODAY is Wales’s national day of celebration, an annual festival which commemorates Saint David, the patron Saint of Wales.
It’s a day for the Welsh to show their passion, to proudly wear their daffodil and wave their Welsh flag with pride. Nowhere are these celebrations as great as in Cardiff and there are a host of activities which take place across the city, as well as a formal visit from either the British Monarch or the Prince of Wales.
But where do these celebrations stem from? And why do they mean so much to the people of Wales?

The Cardiff Mardi Gras festival has been given a massive grant of almost £190,000 by the Big Lottery Fund.

CARDIFF Mardi Gras has just been given a huge grant of almost £190,000 from Big Lottery funding.

The festival of gay rights, which has been going since 2010, looks set to be an even bigger success this year after a big influx of funds. Despite recent cuts to charities and social care in Cardiff, the Mardi Gras in 2013 can now not only go ahead but be more fabulous than before.

As part of Go Green Week 2013 there were talks and demonstrations in the university grounds, as well as a residential yurt.

 

Environmental action has been taking place in the grounds of Cardiff University as part of a national initiative called Go Green Week.

The scheme is targeted towards schools and universities, and aims to raise awareness of pressing issues such as climate change and sustainability.

The People and Planet society at Cardiff University have organised the Go Green Week and have put on a range of demonstrations and talks, as well as collaborating with the Vegetarian and Vegan society to promote an event called Meat Free Monday.

Our reporters find out what life was like during the English Civil War at the living museum in Treharris.

If you think history is dull, then you’ve never been to Llancaiach Fawr Manor in Treharris, just a half hour’s drive from Cardiff. Actors at the house make its past come to life, taking visitors back to the Civil War in 1645.

The manor was then home to Colonel Edward Prichard, Commissioner of Array for the Royalist cause in Glamorganshire, and his family. Visitors can see how the wealthy Prichards lived during this period by walking through an interactive museum before entering the house itself.
