The children of east Cardiff have had their education ruined for the last seven years, claimed one resident as locals gave their feedback on the future of school provisions in the area.  

The building of a new school in the region has been one of the most controversial issues over the best part of a decade. The latest proposal from Cardiff Council plans to build a new purpose-built school on the site where Rumney High School now stands.

Prayers have been banned from meetings at Cardiff Council following a High Court ruling which says the practice is “unlawful.”

Party leaders have instead agreed to voluntary prayers being held in the Council Chamber prior to meetings. This ruling will come into effect from tomorrow’s meeting.

Traditionally prayers have been led by a chaplain at the start of monthly full council meetings at City Hall or County Hall.

The previous agency was scrapped five years ago, but this move was criticised by the Welsh Affairs Committee who said the closure of the WDA has reduced the visibility of Wales in the global market.

Prayers at the beginning of Cardiff Council meetings could be a thing of the past following a High Court ruling today.

In a test case which could affect councils across England and Wales, Mr Justice Ouseley ruled a Devon council acted unlawfully by saying prayers as part of their formal meetings.

Cardiff’s cyclists have celebrated the success of a campaign to keep Bute Park open in the dark

Bute Park has been open for longer since cycling campaigners lobbied to keep it open until 7pm. After a three-month trial, Cardiff Council has agreed to continue the later locking until the clocks go forward in March.

Riverside Councillor Iona Gordon, also a keen cyclist, welcomed the trial’s extension and said it was not just cyclists who were benefiting from the park’s later opening hours. She said: “A lot of pedestrians have said they’ve been using the path often.

Cardiff Council have rejected calls from South Wales Police to introduce a condition requiring clubs to scan their patrons's ID.
 
South Wales Police suggested last October that people who want entry into venues with the ID system will have to allow the club to scan their driver’s licence and in some cases, fingerprints.

Councillor Nigel Howells, sport, leisure and culture executive, said: “Cardiff has been the only major UK city without a museum telling our story.

"We had this wonderful building here, crying out for community use. There are more than a thousand objects here which have been donated by Cardiff residents."

Cardiff police have hit back at a councillor who has criticised the force for increasing parking problems in one of the city’s worst-affected areas.

Councillor Ramesh Patel said police are failing to tackle dangerous parking in Canton, which is putting peoples’ safety at risk.

In a blistering attack on the force Coun Patel said police needed to “get off their bikes and start booking cars”.

Cardiff Bay looks set to lose the WOW on the Waterfront festival this year because of council budget cuts.

The decision to cut the two-day festival, usually held each summer, will be made later today (Friday) after the Welsh Assembly has finalised budget decisions.

Councillor Nigel Howells said: “There’s no money in the council budget. Everything will have to come from the Assembly Government, dependent on the settlement, and if we don't get the funding then we will need to cancel one of this year's festivals.

The council has proposed Grangetown Nursery merge with Grangetown Primary, even though the sites of the two schools will remain ten minutes apart. The parents, staff and governors have been told repeatedly consultation on the issue will be carried out, but have been left in limbo for more than two years.

A councillor who unwittingly spread false rumours about a pub hosting a fascist group has set the record straight on Twitter.
 
Last week Coun Dixon mistakenly retweeted a message that said the Cricketer's Pub in Riverside was hosting the British Freedom Party, a splinter group of the British National Party.

In fact the pub hosted The Freedom Association, a cross-party right-wing group which strongly denies links to extreme nationalism.

Hundreds attended an ethnic minorites health fair in Cardiff, where therapies and health checks were available free of charge.

The fair took place at City Hall yesterday to encourage greater health awareness in ethnic minority communities.

More than 50 stalls offered information and various tests including diabetes, eye and blood pressure checks.

Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Councillor Keith Hyde, said: "It's very well attended and gives out a good message to multicultural communities in Cardiff."

A theatre which has staged an array of talent from Tom Jones to community productions is about to get a quarter of a million pound facelift.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council and Penarth Town Council have rearranged their finances to go ahead with renovation of The Paget Rooms, Penarth, over a period of three years.

Penarth Council currently have more than £100,000 in reserves, including a £15,000 grant from the Vale council, to which they will continually add, amounting to a quarter of a million.

A Freedom of Information Act request has showed a total of 1,390 potholes have been reported across the capital, and will each cost between £25 and £50 to repair.

It will cost up to £69,000 to repair all the potholes across Cardiff, The Cardiffian can reveal.

A special tree planting ceremony took place in a Cardiff suburb yesterday.

Five Mountain Ash trees were planted in Parc y Pentre, Rhiwbina, to replace those which were destroyed by vandals in October last year.

A further two were also planted to replace those which were badly damaged or had simply died.

Cardiff Council Parks department planted the trees that had been funded by Rhiwbina residents.

Residents raised the money after the Council said they could not afford to replace them.

Cardiff councillors have joined Government calls for the council to cut down on "non jobs."

The Government hit out yesterday at local councils hiring non-essential staff such as “cheerleading development officers” while cutting back basic services.

Local government minister Bob Neil revealed new research saying councils have hired 180,000 extra staff since 1997.

RESIDENTS are up in arms as a bar plans to extend its opening hours to 3.30am.

Managers at Koko Gorilaz on Miskin Street, Cathays, submitted an application to Cardiff Council which also includes the right to play "amplified music" and serve drinks until 3am.

The revised licence will allow the bar to remain open until 3.30am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and serve alcohol until 3am, while the existing licence allows the bar to remain open until 1.30am at weekends, the latest of any pub in residential Cathays.

Maindy Barracks Squadron 580 is looking to re-establish their connection to Penarth since the troop disbanded in April 1993.

Captains from the 580 Transport Squadron have been investigating the history of the Territorial Army group and hope to reinstate Penarth as the natural successors of the squad.

The Riverside by-election on March 3 will see Riverside Market founder Steve Garret take on, among others, the Lib Dems' Gwilym Owen, who runs the market's website.

When Steve Garrett agreed to stand for Plaid Cymru in the forthcoming Riverside by-election, he would have expected the usual competition from candidates of other parties.


What the founder of the Riverside Market may not have expected, however, was to see the name of a colleague on the ballot sheet.


The Liberal Democrats named Gwilym Owen as their candidate to replace the outgoing Councillor Gwenllian Lansdown, pitting Steve against the man who has run the Riverside Market’s website for the past seven years.

Cardiff Council is standing firm on their investment into the arts despite a survey of 5,000 households which found residents would prefer money to be spent on street repairs and traffic management.

The 2010 survey found Cardiff residents consider major events and venues as the lowest priority, but plans for £200,000 to be invested into improvements at the New Theatre were welcomed at the draft Budget Scrutiny Committee meeting on Monday February 14.

The council's strategy was unclear, grit bins were not sufficiently refilled, and the snow's dry and powdery texture made it difficult to clear, an independent Snow Report has revealed.

The report, carried out by a management and transport consultant, critiqued the council’s handling of the snow in December, and made recommendations for the future.

The report, written by Brian Smith, was published on Friday, and examined both the planning and the recovery period.
