Welsh playwight Tim Price talks about his new work, For Once.

Tim Price, co-founder of fringe writing company, Dirty Protest, yesterday opened his critically acclaimed debut play, For Once, in Cardiff’s Sherman Cymru theatre.

The story of a family dealing with the after-effects of a fatal car accident, Tim felt compelled to write For Once after a week in the countryside opened his eyes to the number of teen deaths in road traffic accidents.

Weather concerns mean competitors are not prepared to stand outside.

The Miss Universe Wales 2012 final has been delayed by almost a month, after organisers raised last minute concerns about competitors having to walk outside the building to access the stage.

The young Welsh beauties were expected to compete at Mercure Holland House Hotel in Cardiff tonight.  But organisers were unhappy when they found out the girls would need to step outside in costumes and make-up to access the stage.

Noël  Coward's play within a play is executed with style at the New Theatre

STAR QUALITY is a play within a play, adapted from a 1951 short story and unproduced 1967 script by writer, wit and bon vivante Noël Coward.

It tells the story of troubled West End production Dark Heritage as its cast, author and director struggle to lift it above the mediocre.

Leading lady Lorraine Barrie, played as a whirl of ego, preciousness and coquetry by Liza Goddard, battles with director Ray Malcolm (Daniel Casey of Midsummer Murders fame) for creative control of the play.

AS a newly elected Margaret Thatcher sweeping into the Commons chamber for the first time in recent Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady, Alexandra Roach was surrounded by male actors.

“I felt very female there, as all the extras were men and they were all in brown with me in my bright blue dress,” she said.

The 24-year-old Welsh actress had to put up with chauvinist jibes just as Margaret Thatcher did though she didn’t deal with it quite like the Prime Minister.

An interim executive board was installed in a failing primary school by Cardiff council yesterday (Monday) to turn it around.

 

Cardiff council has installed an interim executive board in a failing primary school in order to turn it around.

The replacement of St Alban’s RC primary school’s governors with an executive board yesterday is the first time this measure has been used in Wales.

The troubled Tremorfa school was put under special measures in November after Estyn inspectors uncovered “systemic failures” at all levels of leadership and management over a three-year period.

The number of complaints received by Cardiff Bus over 14 months exceeded 2,000, as passengers criticised drivers' attitudes, standards of driving and their failure to stop to pick up passengers.

An FOI request revealed Cardiff Bus received 2,319 complaints between 1 January 2010 and 28 February 2011. The “attitude” of bus drivers received 399 complaints, while their “driving standards” earned them 378 complaints.

The Noah's Ark Appeal has revealed a 71 per cent drop in money raised from charity clothes bags after a spree of thefts from bogus collectors.

The children's charity tries to raise £100,000 each year from the clothes bags to help equip and support the Children's Hospital for Wales, based at the Cardiff Royal Infirmary in Newport Road. It has seen a significant blow after the shocking number of recent thefts from outside homes in Cardiff.

Cardiff-based music video director Ryan Owen premiered his new project this week

Shown as part of the Wales One World festival at Cardiff’s Chapter Arts centre, Sink is a seven-minute film set in Butetown and made by Cardiff resident filmmaker Ryan Owen.

Despite the screening being at 9.30am – an unusual time to see a movie – some of the capital’s best-known actors were out in force to check out the short film, including Pobol y Cwm’s Brian Hibbard.

Cast members double up as the onstage musicians to provide a welcome change from the traditional formula.

The all-singing, all-dancing guys and dolls leave audience members feeling the urge to get up and join in.

In an interview with the The Cardiffian, David Rosser, director of the Confederation of British Industry Wales, said poor economic performance was probably the greatest disappointment of devolved government so far.

His comments come just two days before voters decide on whether to shift more power from Westminster to the Assembly.

A controversial DNA test sold over the pharmacist counter will enable Cardiff parents to find the paternity of their child from their own home.

As of today, parents of Cardiff will be able to determine the paternity of their child by using an over-the-counter test which can be taken at home.

The contraversial Assuredna test is being sold by high-street pharmacists Boots, Cardiff being one of the selected stores across the country to stock the product.
