UPDATED: City centre cordoned off in two separate incidents

At around 2pm today, armed South Wales Police officers flooded the Huggard Centre on Custom House Street, Cardiff City Centre, following a threatening phone call.

The statement from South Wales police is currently:

Officers responding to a threatening telephone call in Cardiff arrested a 19-year-old man for malicious communications.

We are yet to confirm this was the man arrested on St Mary Street earlier today, but it seems likely. We are unaware of any other arrests related to this incident.

We interviewed Richard Edwards, who works in the Huggard Centre, about an hour ago.

Pothole repairs could cost council £69,000

A Freedom of Information Act request has showed a total of 1,390 potholes have been reported across the capital, and will each cost between £25 and £50 to repair.

It will cost up to £69,000 to repair all the potholes across Cardiff, The Cardiffian can reveal.

The Cardiffian calculates it will cost between £34,750 and £69,500 to fix all reported potholes.


Councillor Delme Bowen, councillor for traffic and transportation, said he was confident the cost could be met.

Wales’ Environment Agency received 12 calls from concerned Cardiff residents yesterday regarding a suburb stream running white.

Wales’s Environment Agency received 12 calls from concerned Cardiff residents yesterday regarding a suburb stream running white.

Rhiwbina residents noticed the discolouration of the stream and reported it.

Officers from Environment Agency Wales took samples from Whitchurch Brook and investigations traced the discolouration back to two nearby underground drinking water reservoirs.

The agency has today announced that it would like to reassure residents in Rhiwbina that there is nothing to be alarmed about.

The Snow Report

The council's strategy was unclear, grit bins were not sufficiently refilled, and the snow's dry and powdery texture made it difficult to clear, an independent Snow Report has revealed.

The report, carried out by a management and transport consultant, critiqued the council’s handling of the snow in December, and made recommendations for the future.

The report, written by Brian Smith, was published on Friday, and examined both the planning and the recovery period.
